Following the details announced by Foras na Gaeilge in December of a new scheme which will provide funding to an online Irish language digital newspaper, today, 11 April 2014, has been named as the new service provider.

As two print newspapers were discontinued in 2013, Gaelscéal and Foinse, a consultation process was carried out by Foras na Gaeilge to examine the views held by the Irish language community regarding the provision of news services.

Following on from the consultation process the new scheme was announced in December and each of the six applicants to the scheme were interviewed with the successful company being is located in An Spidéal in Conamara and is run by an extremely experienced news team - Seán Tadhg Ó Gairbhí, Micheál Ó Cinnéide, Seán Ó Mainnín, Emer Ní Dhomhnaill and Ciarán Ó Súilleabháin. 

Under the scheme, an online newspaper will be be provided on a weekly basis, free of charge.  While the demand for a printed newspaper was clear throughout the consultation process Foras na Gaeilge have confirmed that this will service will only be available online.

The service will cater to the needs of the Irish language community regarding all aspects of international news and will focus predominantly on written reporting and commentary.

Chief Executive of Foras na Gaeilge, Ferdie Mac an Fhailigh, said, “We now anticipate that will be a valuable source of news for the Irish speaking public, not only in Ireland but further afield, and that it will even be an example of innovation for the journalism sector generally”.

There will be nine people employed on an ongoing basis in the company’s offices in the Conamara Gaeltacht, both full-time and part-time, as well as ten high profile columnists who will be a core team of freelance journalists providing material for the newspaper.

This announcement was made in the wake of Foras na Gaeilge’s decision on 28 February to discontinue the current funding arrangements for magazines Feasta, An tUltach, and NósMag and for the websites, and, from 30 June 2014.

A four-year contract with a value of €1.2 milliún, or €300,000 per year, will now be agreed by Foras na Gaeilge with  It is expected that the online news-service will be available by the end if the summer from  It was also announced today that a scheme for a lifestyle publication would be announced at the end of May.
