Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh awarded to Tesco Galway

Mayor of Galway City, Councillor Pádraig Conneely, awarded Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh 2014 to Tesco Galway, at a special ceremony in the Galway Bay Hotel on Thursday, 10 April 2014.

The competition is held every year by Gaillimh le Gaeilge in association with the Galway Advertiser and Cumann Tráchtála na Gaillimhe and aims to promote Galway as a bilingual city, showing that Irish is thriving in the city of the tribes.

Tesco Galway, located in the Galway Shopping Centre on the Headford Road, was named as this year’s winner in the Retail category, sponsored by Galway Bay FM, and was later selected as the overall winner of the competition.

Tesco Galway has embraced the Irish language throughout its newly refreshed store giving it a strong bilingual image with prominence given to the Irish language on aisle signage. They have introduced the language onto Tesco branding – translating their well-known tagline – Tugann an rud is lú cúnamh! Customers can expect a service in Irish at designated checkouts, at the customer service desk and around the shop floor. The judges were also impressed with the amount of Irish on display behind the scenes.

All of the 200 employees are being introduced to the language through bilingual phrases and notices in in all staff areas as well as participating in Irish language classes to enhance the shopping experience for Irish speaking customers. They have also introduced Irish on tannoy announcements as well as dual signage on online shopping vans.  In their plans for the future, dual-language aisle signage is being rolled out to all stores as they are being refitted and they also plan to introduce dual language self- service counters in the stores around the country.

Mayor of Galway City, Councillor Pádraig Conneely, presented Denis McCarthy, Manager of Tesco, with a sculpture by Pádraic Reaney, designed especially for Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh as well as an Advertising Package worth €2,500 from the Galway Advertiser.  They will also receive national publicity with The Irish Times, an advertising package with, a management contract with the Solution Guys, a series of 4 Web Strategy workshops sponsored by Aró Internet Business Development and one year’s membership of Galway Chamber and Gaillimh le Gaeilge.

Speaking on behalf of the judges, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, Dean of UCD School of Business, said that “they were particularly impressed by the ‘Seirbhís i nGaeilge’ that Tesco developed as well as the work that is being done behind the scenes to promote the language among the 200 staff with the introduction of Irish language classes in the store.  He also congratulated them on the dual language signage and the fact that the Irish language was given first preference to the English language on aisle signage”.

Chair of Gaillimh le Gaeilge, Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh, congratulated all of the winners and commended their bilingual work.  He spoke about the importance of bilingual status for the city in order to ensure that Galway doesn’t lose its reputation as a ‘Cathair Ghaelach’.
