Mercator calls for abstracts

 The Merator Network of Language Diversity Centres announces a: Call for Abstracts for its Conference on ‘Developments in the curriculum of language teaching and learning, at primary school level and in secondary education’ to be held on 17-18 September 2009 at the Mercator Research Centre/Fryske Akademy in Ljowert/ Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.

Abstracts are invited on the following themes and topics:

  • The role of Multilingual Education in relation to the Multicultural Society
  • Promotion of a language outside formal education: ‘our language is cool’
  • Involvement of immigrants in multilingual education? Economic and social value of learning RML, immigrant and foreign languages
  • Developments in trilingual education
  • Continuity between school systems
  • Testing of language skills

 Within these areas the focus could be put on best practice, continuity, involvement of native speakers, and the testing of language skills. Deadline (extended) for submission of abstracts (min. 300 – max. 500 words) is 15th May 2009. Notifications of acceptance will be sent before 29th May 2009.

During the conference there will be parallel workshops with two foci: what policy recommendations can be made to decisions makers, and which topics need further research. Results of the workshop will be included in the Annual Report of the Mercator Network. You can send your contribution to
