One of Ireland’s leading Irish language publishing houses, Sáirséal Ó Marcaigh, or Sáirséal agus Dill as it was once better known, has been acquired by Cló Iar-Chonnachta.

Sáirséal agus Dill was founded in 1945 by Seán Sáirséal Ó hEigeartaigh and his wife, Bríd Ní Mhaoileoin, to develop Irish language literature and to assist Irish language writers.

The company quickly rose to prominence as the country’s pioneering and most important Irish language publishing house and published such illustrious works as Máirtín Ó Cadhain’s Cré na Cille and the poetry of Seán Ó Ríordáin and Máire Mhac an tSaoi.

Among its other leading publications were Dúil by Liam Ó Flaithearta, Pádraic Ó Conaire’s Scothscéalta, Bullaí Mhártain by Síle and Donncha Ó Céileachair and Lig Sinn i gCathú from the pen of Breandán Ó hEithir. Aingeal and Caoimhín Ó Marcaigh assumed control of the company in 1981 and the final book published under their auspices  Muiris Mac Conghail’s Aghaidheanna Fidil agus Púicíní - is to be published today.

The company published up to 200 Irish language books between 1945 and 2009. Cló Iar-Chonnachta will oversee the sales and marketing of the remaining stock of Sáirséal Ó Marcaigh books as well as re-publishing some of the company’s classics.  Cló Iar-Chonnachta is also running a sale on Sáirséal Ó Marcaigh/Sáirséal agus Dill books at the moment.
