Who took away Mr Myers’ teddy?

Who took away Mr Myers’ teddy?

It is with sadness and dismay that I read Kevin Myers’ rant against the Irish language and all who speak it (Irish Independent, July 22).

What has the Irish language done to Mr Myers that he deems it appropriate to spit such venom? Perhaps it took away his teddy when he was small? His views of the language are out of date and ill-informed. In seeking to relegate the Irish language to the dustbin by approving of the recommendations of ‘An Bord Snip Nua’ to abolish the Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, he is ignoring the fact that a significant number of people wish to retain our language and cultural heritage.

I agree entirely with Kevin Myers’ assertion that the job of government is to govern, but government must take into account the needs of its entire people, including those living within the Gaeltacht, not just those deemed worthy by Kevin Myers. The Irish language did not cause the present financial crisis, nor did senior citizens or people on social welfare. Both Kevin Myers and Colm McCarthy should remember this.
