Beo.ie awarded Foras Contract

At its Board meeting held on Friday 18 December 2009 in the new Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin in Derry Foras na Gaeilge announced that it is to renew its contract with Oideas Gael to provide an online Irish language magazine, www.beo.ie.  Oideas Gael have been publishing the online magazine at www.beo.ie since 2001. 


The contract was put out to public tender in September of this year and three other applicants competed for it.Foras na Gaeilge is renewing the contract worth €210,000 for a period of three years, January 2010 to December 2012. 

As part of this new contract Oideas Gael intend to redevelop and redesign the online Irish language magazine which will retain the name www.beo.ie.Oideas Gael was founded in 1984 and since then has provided Irish language classes and cultural activities to thousands from Ireland and all over the world including Japan and Hong Kong. 

Since www.beo.ie  began they have published 103 editions of the magazine.

Speaking after the meeting Ferdie Mac an Fhailigh, Chief Executive of Foras na Gaeilge said “Since 2001, which saw the first Irish language online magazine appear on Beo.ie over 100 high quality editions have been made available.  We are delighted that under this new contract Beo.ie will further develop into a more interactive multimedia publication and I wish all at Oideas Gael the best in this endevour.”

“The Irish language is thriving in the media in Ireland on television, radio, in print and also online. We see this online publication as an integral part of the Irish language media and we look forward to working with Oideas Gael on this important redevelopment.

”Oideas Gael will publish the magazine every month as well as writing regular blogs.  Guest writers such as Alex Hijmans, Emer Ní Bhrádaigh and Rónán Mac an Iomaire will also contribute to the magazine.  www.beo.ie will further develop to becoming a multimedia website, using video, photographs and podcasts, as well as all the regular articles, making it appeal to students as well as learners and the average Irish reader.  The magazine will cover a wide range of topics including current affairs, news from abroad, technology, the arts and music, as well as an in-depth interview every month.“

Oideas Gael are delighted to be once again receiving this contract to provide an online magazine.  It is recognition from Foras na Gaeilge for the team of editors and writers who have been with us since the beginning.  It’s our intention to upgrade the website in the coming months with the aim of substantially increasing the number of readers.  It is our mission to publish the best of Irish writing for Irish speakers in Ireland and all over the world, said Liam Ó Cuinneagáin,

Prior to the meeting, the Board of Foras na Gaeilge were given a tour of Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin which was partly funded by Foras na Gaeilge to the tune of £678,000.  Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin which opened its doors this September hosts a  multipurpose Arts Centre including classrooms, a youth club and  a 200 seat theatre, an Irish language bookshop, a café, a business incubation suite and office space and provides facilities for the Irish speaking community of the Northwest.
