President lends her support to Rith 2010

Yesterday in  Áras an Uachtaráin, President Mary Mc Aleese presented the organizers of Rith 2010 with a message of encouragement for the Irish language. This message will be held inside the specially designed baton which will travel the 1600 km relay-run.

Rith 2010, one of the main events of Seachtain na Gaeilge, begins in Belfast on the 9th March and will finish in Eyre Square, Galway on St. Patrick’s Day where the President’s message will be read to an awaiting crowd.

Rith 2010 is the first event of its kind in Ireland and is modeled on the Basque Country’s Korrika which has been established since 1980.

Last year over 600, 000 people took part in Korrika which is accompanied by music, cultural activities and thousands of spectators along the way.

“We’re delighted that President Mary Mc Aleese is lending her support to Rith 2010 by meeting with us today and by writing this special message that will be hidden inside the baton until the finishing line on St. Patrick’s Day,” says Siobhán Seoighe, Events Manager, Rith 2010.

“We’ve seen how the Basque Country celebrate their language and culture in such a healthy way.  So we’ve decided to bring the equivalent to Ireland for the first time.  This is a real celebration where thousands of people will run to celebrate the Irish language.

”Community groups, school groups, clubs and individuals are all invited to take part at any stage of the 1,600 km course.  There are many ways to take part – all the information you need is on

As well as the run itself, there will be plenty of other events happening along the route as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge.
