Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta Annual Conference

Education Minister for Northern Ireland,  Caitríona Ruane officially opened the Comhairle Na Gaelscolaíochta Annual Conference last Friday in Coláiste Feirste in Belfast.

Speaking to delegates from gaelscoileanna across Northern Ireland, the Minister spoke of her plans to implement a review of Irish medium education which would focus on equality.

A review in this context  she said would offer “a comprehensive, creative and strategic way forward which means the sector is part of the system, not apart from it.”

She also spoke of her vision for the sector in the future where: “a strong and vibrant Irish-medium sector is routed in an unshakeable belief in equality, and in the creation of a school system where every single one of our children has the same opportunity to succeed, regardless of social economic background, gender or race.”

She announced the establishment of new pilot schemes in deal with transport issues in some areas.

Acknowledging the issues raised by schools as to school accommodation standards she was aware  of the need for improved accommodation and better transport arrangements and she said that  £2million to  has been given to  Iontaobhas na Gaelscolaíochta to ensure that the problem of substandard accommodation in some schools is addressed as rapidly as possible.
