Gaels set to descend on Killarney

Ireland’s longest running Irish language festival, Oireachtas na Samhna, will take place from 26-31 October in the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney, Co. Kerry. Thousand of visitors are expected to attend the festival which has been travelling the country since the end of the nineteenth century.

Some of the country’s top sean-nós singers will compete for the coveted Corn Uí Riada and the best of our traditional freestyle dancers will take part in the sean-nós dancing finals.

Local performers, young and old, are honing their musical skills and sharpening their competitive instincts in preparation for the competitions, which will be held in various venues in Killarney throughout the festival. Competitions will be held in sean-nós singing, sean-nós dancing, violin, uilleann pipes, harp, duets and many more.

Speaking at a press launch for this year’s festival, Liam Ó Maolaodha, National Director of Oireachtas na Gaeilge said, The annual Oireachtas Festival showcases the very best of our Irish cultural heritage, the festival boasts an extensive programme with a diverse range of events, including sessions; concerts; competitions featuring sean-nós singing, dancing, storytelling, drama and visual arts; seminars; workshops; lectures; and a lot more besides. We are looking forward to experiencing the world renowned Killarney hospitality and the very fine venues in the town.”
