Comórtas Uí Néill Poetry Shortlist Announced

The shortlist for the Gaelic poetry competition for poets from Scotland and Ireland,  Comórtas Uí Néill 2011 was announced today.  Eight poets have been selected to read at the grand final of the poetry competition which will take place in Dublin on April 7th.

Cuairt na bhFilí has been on the go for over 40 years, and is the longest established cultural exchange between Ireland and Scotland.  This year, the Scottish poets, Niall O’Gallagher, and  Maoilios Caimbeul, accompanied by singer Fiona Dunn, and musician Dòmhnall MacDhòmhnaill will perform at events in Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich, Belfast, 5th April, Áras Pobail Ráth Chairn, on 6th April, and Cois Teallaigh, Dublin 2 on 7th April.

For the past few months, Irish and Scottish poets have been busy writing new poems to enter the Comórtas Uí Néill, the bilingual poetry competition which is one of the highlights of the cultural exchange.  The competition honours the legacy of one of the founders of Cuairt na bhfilí, Col. Eoghan Ó Néill.

The final of this competition will take place on Thursday, 7th April 2011 at 8pm.  The shortlisted poets include:

1. Sólas – Doireann Ní Ghríofa
2. Gort an Óir – Seán Breathnach
3. Ceangal na cúig gcaol – Seán Ó Muireagáin
4. Díosgán – Rody Gorman
5. Irrintiza – Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh
6. Míol mór Bhreandáin – Proinsias Mac a’ Bhaird
7. Lúb ar lár – Máire Wren
8. Maidin Geimhridh – Fionnuala Ní Mhealláin

Noted poets Máire Holmes and Maoilios Caimbeul will be present on the night with the difficult task of adjudicating.  Not only will the winner receive a cheque to the value of €500 as well as Trófaí Uí Néill 2011 but the winning poem will be published in the magazine Comhar and in the fortnightly EOLAS e-zine.
