Eyre Square return on cards for O Conaire

AN iconic figure in the west of Ireland may be about to end his exile.

The statue of Padraic O Conaire (pictured), which stood for more than 60 years at the top of Eyre Square in Galway, has been housed in the city’s museum for safety reasons since 1999 after it was vandalised.

Now city councillors are pressing for the statue of the author of such renowned works as ‘M’asal Beag Dubh’ to be returned to his original site.

The statue was unveiled by Eamon de Valera at Eyre Square in 1935. But throughout the 1980s and 1990s it became the subject of repeated vandalism.
