International Association of Language Commissioners founded

Following the success of The International Conference for Language Rights which ran from 23-24 May, the decision has been made to found an association which will aid the work of Language Commissioners all over the world in the preservation of minority languages.

The association is made up of the following language commissioners who spoke at the International  Conference two weeks ago: Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages, Canada, Rafael Ribó, Catalan Ombudsman; Mxolisi Zwane CEO, Pan South African Language Board; Meri Huws, Welsh Language Commissioner; Malin Brännkärr, Special advisor on language rights, Ministry of Justice, Finland; Michel Carrier, Commissioner of Official Languages for New Brunswick; Seán Ó Cuirreáin, Irish Language Commissioner; François Boileau, French Language Services Commissioner of Ontario; Sandra Inutiq Languages Commissioner of Nunavut and Slavisa Mladenovic Language Commissioner, Kosovo.

The decision was reached at a meeting with the language commissioners chaired by Minister Pär Stenbäck from Finland after the public events on May 25th. The themes which arose during the conference and summarised by Dr. Colin Williams were discussed with minutes yet to be approved.
Graham Fraser was unanimously voted as chairperson and the next meeting is set to happen online in a month’s time. The aims and goals of the association will be announced after that meeting.

There is undoubtedly a huge importance attached to an association of this kind in the way that it offers representatives from all over the world an opportunity to make regular contact in order to move towards implementing effective strategies for protecting minority languages. As well as that, the similarities and differences between practices in different countries can be easily compared and contrasted.
