The Commissioner asked that a complete review of the teaching of Irish be undertaken. However much of the media did a review overnight - that is get rid of the teaching of Irish altogether. The member organisations of the Comhdháil discussed the report at their meeting at Easter. There is a serious need for this review. There is a need to undertake it in a measured way and there is a need to undertake it now. It is unfortunate that the Minister for Education did not take the opportunity to begin the debate at the recent teachers' conferences. Another interesting fact according to the report is that there 1% use of Irish in the Houses of the Oireachtas. In 1989, Hywel spearheaded the creation and development of Menter a Busnes (Enterprise and Business), a Welsh economic development company which aims to develop the economic potential of Welsh speakers. Prior to that he worked with the Development Board of Rural Wales, and Theatr Feilinfach. More recently he was a member of the Welsh National Entrepreneurship Action Plan Steering Group. Hywel will give a lecture on Language, culture and entrepreneurship: the Welsh experience and future directions. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Business School restaurant. POETRY FESTIVAL RESULTS 2004 The results of the 16th Anuual Poetry Festival are now available. There were 6,079 entries received and there were winners from every corner of the world and Ireland of course. The poems that won are all available to read now at www.dircoco.ie/library. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council were delighted to see a big increase in the number of poems entered in all the Irish Language categories this year in comparison to other years. Nearly twice the amount of Irish poems were received this year as were last year. The Council are delighted to announce that an entry from Wales, Cartref by Tony Banchi, won the European Poetry Award, the biggest award in the Festival. The Assemblée des Regions d'Europe award this trophy for the most distinctive poem in the Adult Category.
