Na hÉireannaigh láidir i mbliana ag Prix Europa '08

Irish productions to feature heavily at Prix Europa 08

Beidh an Prix Europa 08 ar siúl i mBeirlín agus in Potsdam i mbliana idir 18-25 Deireadh Fómhair. Is comórtas é seo a dhéanann ceiliúradh ar na meáin san Eoraip agus a thugann gradaim dóibh idir raidió, theilifís agus na meáin atá ag teacht chun cinn.

Tá na gradaim roinnte i gcatagóirí éagsúla agus tugtar go leor poiblíochta dóibh ar fud na hEorpa. Tá méid mór léiriúchán Éireannach ainmnithe le haghaidh na ngradam i mbliana - ina measc siúd 'Kings', 'Whistleblower' agus an clár faisnéise 'Prime Time Investigates-Cocaine'.

Tá ocht gcatagóir sa chomórtas agus i mbliana cuireadh isteach 582 iarratas ó 36 tír fud fad na hEorpa, as ar piocadh 213 acu chun dul ar aghaidh chuig an gcomórtas.  Tá dhá iarratas ó Éirinn ag súil le gradam ficsin ar an teilifís a bhaint amach, an scannán dátheangach ‘Kings’ ag TG4 agus ‘Whistleblower’ ag RTÉ, faoi stiúir Dermot Boyd.  Ag tnúth le gradam a bhuachan sa chatagóir a bhaineann le cúrsaí reatha tá an clár faisnéise 'Prime Time Investigates-Cocaine’.  Tá ‘Human Traffic’ faoi stiúir David Whelan istigh ar TV IRIS a ghlacann iarratais a bhaineann le hilchultúrthacht i measc shochaithe na hEorpa.

Tá an-chuid iarratas ag RTÉ istigh ar an Prix Europa i mbliana, ceann acu seo ar an ngradam do chláir faisnéise. Is é Charlie McCarthy stiúrthóir ‘Being John Banville’, agus tugann sé léargas dúinn ann ar shaol John Banville a bhfuil an gradam Man Booker bainte amach aige.

Is iad seo na hiarratais eile atá ainmnithe; ‘Just 'Cause’, faoi stiúir Conall Morrison, scríofa ag Gary Mitchell, agus ‘Know Your Station’,  faoi stiúir Eithne Hand, curtha le chéile agus scríofa ag Jinx Lennon, Mikel Murfi, Miss Paula Flynn agus Eithne Hand.  Sa chatagóir Ficsean Radió tá an clár ‘Piano: Variations and Sliding Scales’, faoi stiúir Kaye Mortley, ainmnithe do ghradam, agus tá ‘No Cure for Mickey Finn’, faoi stiúir Peter Woods, i gcatagóir Clár Faisnéise Radio.

Ádh mór leis na hiarratasóirí ar fad!

Imram means a 'voyage of discovery over the ocean' however the voyage the audience will take during this year's IMRAM Festival 2008 will be quite different. Imram will take its audience on a journey which will reveal the rich diversity of modern Irish language literature through eclectic events that blend poetry, prose, film, drama and music in the very heart of the capital city.

The IMRAM Festival will take place between 16-30th September 2008.

IMRAM was founded in 2004. According to IMRAM's  Festival Director Liam Carson  'we endeavour to create a very positive vision towards the Irish culture, in an attempt to visualise the Irish language and Irish literature within a new vibrant and multicultural framework'.

This year, the IMRAM Festival's main focus is to promote Irish Literature and ensure Irish culture and cultural events are given the centre stage and international recognition they deserve. By organising this festival Imram hopes to inspire young Irish people to develop their strong Irish heritage and culture.

IMRAM 2008 focuses on the islands and seas of Ireland and their place in the artistic imagination. The Gaelic Jazz Project can be heard dramatically fusing the ancient and the modern, moving from classic Blasket Island texts to cutting-edge twentieth century poetry.

Dublin based Gaelchultúr Ltd is focusing its energy this autumn on persuading those learners who never quite managed to get to grips with the language to have another try!

Gaelchultúr has been running Irish courses in Dublin and Cork for several years now and the huge increase in the numbers of learners, as well as positive feedback from class participants, has encouraged the company to expand its services to various towns and cities throughout Ireland this September, including Waterford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Letterkenny, Athlone and Galway, to mention but a few.

A complete list of locations is available here

'This time last year we had around 160 learners attending our classes in Temple Bar, Dublin,' says Éamonn Ó Dónaill, Gaelchultúr's Education Director, 'but this year we expect that to rise to around 250 people. We can guarantee that people who come to our classes will find it a rewarding experience and, if they attend on a regular basis, they'll be surprised at how much they pick up.'

Classes will be available at eight levels in Dublin and at three levels around the country.  There is a level for everyone, from absolute beginner starting from scratch, to people who have not spoken a word since they left school, to fluent speakers who wish to improve their accuracy and grammar.

No matter what level, learners will enjoy an interactive and stimulating course and will improve their confidence in the language. Learners will attend a two-hour class one night a week over a 12 week period. The course fee is Eur 240.

For further information please contact Éamonn Ó Dónaill on (01) 675-3658.

Tá leaganacha aige d’amhráin fíor-áille amhail,  Úrchnoc Chéin Mhic Cáinte, Aird Tí Chuain agus ar ndóigh, Tráthnóna Beag Aréir, teideal an albaim nua seo.

Cnuasach atá anseo ó cheirníní a rinne Albert do Ghael Linn idir 1968 agus 1979. Tionlacan giotáir leis féin atá aige den chuid is mó ach tá oirfidigh eile ag seinm leis ar roinnt de na rianta m.sh. Dónal Lunney, Frankie Kennedy agus Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh.

Tá focail na n-amhrán ar fad ar fáil sa leabhrán a ghabhann leis an DD. Is cinnte go mbeidh fáilte mhór roimh an eisiúint seo. Beidh sé á scaoileadh ar 5 Meán Fómhair agus beidh fáil air i siopaí ceoil agus ar líne ó www.gael-linn.ie

For those of you who are music lovers, or for anyone who has a particular interest in the music of Albert Fry, who was a very famous singer in the seventies, you will now be able to avail of a CD of his beautiful songs.

The CD features beautiful versions of some very famous songs such as Úrchnoc Chéin Mhic Cáinte, Aird Tí Chuain and of course, Tráthnóna Beag Aréir, which is the title track.

This is a collection of songs from albums previously recorded for Gael-Linn between 1968 and 1979. A few well known musicians can also be heard in accompaniment on some of the tracks including Dónal Lunney, Frankie Kennedy and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, but on most of the tracks it is Albert himself who can be heard on the guitar.

A booklet with all the lyrics is also provided with the CD. This CD is surely something to look forward to and will be released on September 5th when it will be available from music shops and online at www.gael-linn.ie

Ceol, Craic agus Spraoi ag Pobal na Gaeilge i bPuball na Gaeilge!

Ceol agus Craic at Electric Picnic

Bhí ceol, craic agus spraoi ag an bPicnic Leictreach, ar an Sráidbhaile i gCo. Laoise an deireadh seachtaine seo caite agus é ar fad trí mheán na Gaeilge!  Bhí deis ag Gaeilgeoirí freastal ar Phuball Gaelach ag an bhféile eicléictiúil, áit a raibh neart imeachtaí eagraithe agus iad ar fad trí Ghaeilge.

Bhí lucht Raidió na Life 106.4FM i láthair agus iad ag craoladh beo ó chroílár na féile.  Bhí siamsaíocht de gach cineál ar fáil sa Phuball Gaelach, seónna puipéad le Fíbín, 'Cliúsaíocht faoi luas' (speed dating) faoi stiúir Thomáis Uí Shúilleabháin ón gclár teilifíse 'Seacht' agus bhí Rossa Ó Snodaigh ón ngrúpa Kíla ann ag tabhairt ceachtanna do dhaoine conas eascainí a dhéanamh trí Ghaeilge.

Bhí an fear grinn Deasún Mac an Easpaig, nó Des Bishop mar is fearr aithne air, i láthair freisin, agus ní fada go raibh sé féin agus an puball go léir ag léimneach thart.  Bhí rapcheol Gaeilge le cloisteáil chomh maith ó bhéal an amhránaí mór le rá Cian Morris.

Bhí babhta de cháirióice CLG ann chomh maith, mar a ndearna daoine ón lucht féachana iarracht aithris a dhéanamh ar stíl tráchtaireachta spóirt Mhichíl Uí Mhuircheartaigh agus físeán den chluiche idir Ciarraí agus Corcaigh ar an scáileán mór. Bhí macasamhail an chláir ghrinn, The Panel, a bhíonn le feiceáil ar RTÉ 2, á chraoladh ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, agus Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí sa phríomhchathaoir in áit Dhara Uí Bhriain.  Leis na himeachtaí craiceáilte seo, ní haon ionadh go raibh na ticéid ar fad díolta don fhéile roinnt míonna ó shin.

D'fhreastail os cionn 35,000 duine ar an bPicnic Leictreach i mbliana, ach má chaill tú féin í, is féidir cluas le héisteacht a thabhairt do phodchraoladh de chlár 'An Painéal le Rónán Mac Aodh Bhuí' ón bPicnic Leictreach ar www.rte.ie/rnag agus beidh na cláir a chraol Raidió na Life le fáil ar www.rnl106.com.

There were fun and games at the Electric Picnic in Stradbally, Co. Laois last weekend, and all through the medium of Irish! Irish speakers had a chance to attend the Irish Tent at the eclectic music festival, where many activities had been organised through Irish!

The Raidió na Life 106.4FM team were out in force, and were broadcasting live from the heart of the festival.  All manner of entertainment was provided in the Irish Tent, including puppet shows by drama company Fíbín, Speed Dating under the watchful eye of Tomás Ó Súilleabháin from the television programme 'Seacht', and Rossa Ó Snodaigh was on hand to give lessons on how to curse as Gaeilge.

Comedian Des Bishop was present too, and soon had the audience jumping around to the sound of his version of the famous House of Pain song, 'Léim Thart'.  More Irish language rap music was provided by the famous singer Cian Morris.

Sunday saw a round of GAA Karaoke, where members of the audience attempted to imitate the unique style of the sports commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh while watching Cork playing Kerry on the big screen. An Irish language version of the RTÉ comedy, The Panel, was broadcast on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, hosted by none other than Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí, in place of presenter Dara Ó Briain. With all these crazy events organised, it was no wonder that tickets for this festival sold out a number of months ago.

Over 35,000 attended this year's Electric Picnic, but if you didn’t get to make it yourself, you can sample some of the fun by listening to a Podcast of 'An Painéal le Rónán Mac Aodh Bhuí' at www.rte.ie/rnag or by tuning in to www.rnl106.com

Clár nua ‘Feachtas na mBóithre’ ar TG4

A new programme, ‘Feachtas na mBóithre’ to be broadcast on TG4

Craolfar clár teilifíse dar teideal Feachtas na mBóithre ar TG4 níos déanaí i mbliana, clár atá curtha i dtoll a chéile ag Sharon Ní Loideáin, bean óg as an gCeathrú Rua i gConamara. Is mar chuid de chúrsa Ard-Dioplóma i Léiriú Teilifíse a stiúir Ní Loideáin an clár seo, is cúrsa é seo atá á reáchtáil ag an gcomhlacht teilifíse Nemeton sa Rinn, i gcomhar le hInstitiúid Teicneolaíochta Phort Láirge agus Údarás na Gaeltachta.

Sa chlár seo, déanann Ní Loideáin iniúchadh géar ar an bhfeachtas a thosaigh i gConamara sa bhliain 1983 mar gheall ar an drochbhail a bhí ar na bóithre. I rith an fheachtais chaith cúigear seal i bpríosún agus chuir an feachtas cruth nua freisin ar chúrsaí polaitíochta i gConamara. Beidh an clár seo an-suimiúil ar fad, do mhuintir Chonamara go háirithe.

Craolfar Feachtas na mBóithre, chomh maith le ceithre chlár eile de chuid an chúrsa Ard-Dioplóma i Léiriú Teilifíse i sraith nua darb ainm Céad Seans. Déanann na cláir eile plé ar mheascán d'ábhair éagsúla, ina measc: dráma faisnéise faoi Liam Ó Crotaigh - Robin Hood na nGael; Cú agus Cáil: Finscéal Master McGrath; Torann na dTonnta, clár faoi scéal cheathrar iascairí a bhí ag iascaireacht ó Ché Heilbhic sa Rinn, agus Uimhir a hAon, clár a fhiosraíonn scéal na gcairteacha ceoil.

Bígí ag faire, agus má tá suim ag duine ar bith sa chúrsa Ard-Dioplóma i Léiriú Teilifíse tá eolas ar fáil ó Thríona Uí Bhroin i Nemeton ag (058) 46499.

A new programme, 'Feachtas na mBóithre' (The Roads Campaign) will be broadcast on TG4 later this year, a programme which has been developed by Sharon Ní Loideáin, from An Cheathrú Rua, in Conamara. It was as part of the Higher Diploma in Television Production that Sharon directed this programme, a course offered by Nemeton, in An Rinn, in conjunction with Waterford IT and Údarás na Gaeltachta.

In this programme, Ní Loideáin investigates the campaign which first began in 1983 due to the poor state of the roads in the Conamara area.  During the campaign, five people were imprisoned, and the campaign affected political structures within Conamara.  The programme promises to be very interesting, especially for those connected to the area.

Feachtas na mBóithre will be broadcast, along with four other programmes made during the Higher Diploma in Television Production, in a new series named 'Céad Seans'.  The other programmes discuss various topics, including a documentary about Liam Ó Crotaigh, Cú agus Cáil: Finscéal Master McGrath; Torann na dTonnta, agus Uimhir a hAon.

Keep an eye out for these programmes over the coming months.

Further information on the Higher Diploma in Television Production is available from Tríona Uí Bhroin of Nemeton at 058 46499.

Raidió na Life, Dublin’s Irish language radio station, will be celebrating its 15th birthday in September. As part of the celebrations, the station will be working on a series of programmes looking back over the 15 years of the station’s work.

As part of the process of gathering information on the history of the station, Raidió na Life are seeking each person who worked with the station in the past to contact them with stories about their experiences working in the station, with memories of the founding of the station in 1993, or with any tapes of old programmes and jingles, photographs etc.

As a result of the voluntary nature of the work carried out by Raidió na Life, hundreds of presenters, technicians, researchers etc. have passed through the corridors of Raidió na Life. Sharon Ní Bheoláin and Sinéad Crowley of Nuacht RTÉ, Aileen Gormley of Lyric FM, Tom Ó Brannagáin of 98 FM and many more broadcasters and journalists are among the famous broadcasters who started their broadcasting careers in the Irish language urban station.

'This is an inspiring challenge for us, to try and contact everyone who spent time working at the station and we hope we are successful. Our archive does not cover the entire 15 years of our history on air, therefore we will be working on special programmes in order to cover the complete history of the station from the time of its foundation onwards. We would be very interested to find out more about old programmes and about the experiences of people who were here, with Raidió na Life, in the early days,' commented station manager, Muiris Ó Fiannachta.

Anyone who spent time working with Raidió na Life can get in touch with the station by email at eolas@rnl106.com or by telephone at 01 661 6333.

Anne Marie Nic Ruaidhrí

Anne Marie Nic Ruaidhrí

Sa mhír seo labhraítear le Léiritheoirí nó Stiúrthóirí a chuir isteach ar an scéim mhaoiniúcháin Fuaim agus Fís

Cad is ainm duit? Anne Marie Nic Ruaidhrí

Inis dom faoi do thaithí chraoltóireachta!   Is Léiritheoir mé le Lugh Films ó 2004

Fuair tú maoiniú faoin scéim Fís agus Fuaim - céard dó? Déan cur síos dúinn ar an gclár le do thoil. Cén coincheap atá taobh thiar de?

Fuaireamar maoiniú chun clár faisnéise "Fear na nOileán" a chur le chéile. Bhain an clár seo le scéal an Athar Diarmuid Ó Péicín agus feachtas chun pobal Oileán Thoraí a chaomhnú.  Craoladh an clár seo mar pháirt de shraith darb ainm Ananocht ar TG4.

Agus cén fáth ar dhírigh tú ar an ábhar sin?
Mar is as Toraí dom féin agus bhí eolas maith agam ar an scéal seo.

Cén stáisiún ar craoladh do shaothar air?
Craoladh ar TG4 é.

Cén fáth ar roghnaigh tú an stáisiún sin?
Roghnaigh mé TG4 toisc gur stáisiún Gaeilge é!

An mbíonn tú ag obair leis an stáisiún sin go hiondúil?
Bím.

Cad a cheapann tú faoin scéim Fuaim agus Fís, an é seo an chéad uair duit cur isteach ar an scéim?
Tá an scéim iontach maith.  Is é seo an chéad uair a chuir mé isteach ar an scéim seo.

An bhfuil aon mholtaí agat do léiritheoirí eile a bheadh ag cur iarratais isteach ar an scéim?
Ní mór dóibh scéal láidir a bheith acu agus go leor taighde a bheith déanta roimh ré.

In this section we speak to producers and directors who have made an application under the Sound and Vision funding scheme.

What is your name?
Anne Marie Nic Ruaidhrí

Tell me about your broadcasting experience!  I have been a Producer with Lugh Films since 2004.

You received funding under the Sound and Vision scheme? For what project? Tell us about the programme-what was its conceptual basis?

We received funding to make the documentary, ‘Fear na nOileán’ which depicts the life of Fr. Diarmuid Ó Péicín and the local people on Tory Island and their campaign to conserve the Island.  This documentary was screened on TG4 as part of the Ananocht series.

Why did you concentrate on that topic?
I am a native of Tory Island and therefore I had great knowledge of this subject.

What station was your series broadcast on?
It was broadcast on TG4.

Why did you pick that station?
TG4 was an obvious choice for me as it is an Irish language station.

Do you ordinarily work for that station?
I do.

What do think of the Sound and Vision Scheme, is this the first time that you applied for funding?
The scheme is excellent. This was my first time applying under the Sound and Vision scheme.

Have you any recommendations to other producers who would be interested in applying for funding?
You need to have a very strong story and the topic must be very well researched.

Jimmy Mc Bride, Raidió Pobal Inis Eoghain

Jimmy Mc Bride, Raidió Pobal Inis Eoghain

1. Céard is ainm duitse agus cad as duit agus cé leis a bhfuil tú ag craoladh?
Jimmy Mc Bride is ainm dom, agus tá me ag craoladh le Raidió Pobal Inis Eoghain faoi láthair ar an gclár 'Thall agus Abhus'.

2. Cé chomh fada is atá tú ag craoladh i nGaeilge?
Tá mé ag craoladh le ICR ar feadh ocht mbliana agus bíonn corrchlár agam ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta ó am go ham.

3. Céard é an difríocht is mó, dar leat, idir craoladh i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla?
Toisc gur cainteoir dúchais Gaeilge mé, agus go bhfuil neart Béarla chomh maith agam, ní airím aon difríocht idir a bheith ag craoladh i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla.

4. Cé hé nó cé hí an t-aoi is mó a bhfuil fonn ort agallamh a chur air nó uirthi i nGaeilge?
Níl rogha ar bith faoi leith agam - labhróidh mé le duine ar bith ar mian leo labhairt liom!

5. Cé hé nó hí an t-aoi is fearr a bhí ar an gclár agat?
Bhí an oiread sin aíonna difriúla agam thar na blianta nach bhféadfainn duine a roghnú.

6. Céard é an clár raidió is fearr leatsa?
Is breá liom cláir ar bith le ceol, le hamhráin, filíocht nó seanchas áitiúil.

7. Céard é an spreagadh is mó duitse agus tú i mbun craolta?
Is é an spreagadh is mó atá agam ná a bheith ag iarraidh cláir fhiúntacha a chur i láthair an phobail.

8. An gceapann tú go bhfuil sé níos éasca clár dátheangach a chur i láthair ná ceann i dteanga amháin?
Ní chuireann ceachtar acu isteach ná amach orm.

1.What's your name, where are you from and who are you broadcasting with?
My name is Jimmy McBride, and I broadcast on Inishowen Community Radio (ICR), with a programme called ‘Thall agus Abhus’.

2. How long are you broadcasting in Irish?
I have been broadcasting for eight years with ICR and from time to time I present a show on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

3. What is the biggest difference, do you think, between broadcasting in Irish and in English?
As I am a native Irish speaker, with plenty of English, I don’t really find any difference between broadcasting in Irish or English.

4. Who is the guest you would most like to interview in Irish?
I have no particular preference, I would speak to anyone who wishes to speak to me!

5. Who was the best guest you ever had on your programme?
I have had so many different guests on the show over the years that I couldn’t possibly pick a favourite!

6. What is your favourite radio programme?
I especially like any programmes featuring music, singing, poetry or folklore.

7. What is your greatest inspiration to broadcast?
My biggest inspiration is a desire to provide quality programs for the community.

8. Do you think that it is easier to present a bilingual programme rather than one in only one language
I don’t have any problem with either.

Figiúirí JNLR Eisithe.

JNLR Figures Released

Eisíodh figiúirí JNLR/TNSmrbi le gairid don tréimhse Iúil 2007- Meitheamh 2008.  Chruthaigh na figiúirí go n-éisteann 85% de dhaoine fásta ar fud na tíre go laethúil le meascán de raidió náisiúnta, réigiúnach agus áitiúil.

Cé gur ardaigh figiúirí éisteachta réigiúnacha/áitiúla go dtí 53%, (ardú 1%), níor tugadh aon difríocht faoi deara i bhfigiúirí éisteachta do na stáisiúin náisiúnta.  Do na stáisiúin phoiblí náisiúnta, bhí 23% den mhargadh ag RTÉ Raidió 1, 17% ag RTÉ 2fm, agus 3% ag RTÉ Lyric FM.  Níor tháinig aon athrú ach oiread ar na figiúirí éisteachta do na stáisiúin phríobháideacha náisiúnta, Today FM le sciar 16% den mhargadh agus Newstalk 106-108 FM le sciar de 6% den mhargadh.

Ó thaobh figiúirí aimsithe lucht féachana agus sciar den mhargadh bhí athraithe le tabhairt faoi deara ag beagnach gach stáisiún áitiúil fud fad na tíre, is iad na stáisiúin áitiúla is mó a d’aimsigh lucht féachana de réir na bhfigiúirí seo ná Highland Radio, Limerick’s Live 95Fm, Mid West Radio, WLR FM/Shannonside Northern Sound, agus Tipp Fm/Radio Kerry.  Ó thaobh sciar den mhargadh de, is iad na cúig stáisiún ag a raibh an sciar is mó den mhargadh ná Highland Radio, Mid West Radio, Shannonside/Northern Sound, Tipp Fm agus Radio Kerry.

Bhí dea-scéala ann do Marian Finucane - de réir na bhfigiúirí is deireanaí mhéadaigh lucht éisteachta a cláir faoi 14,000 duine ón tréimhse dheireanach, le lucht éisteachta 323,000 duine ar an meán.  D’ardaigh lucht éisteachta Pat Kenny chomh maith, ardú  13,000 a thugann lucht éisteachta 291,000 duine ar an meán dá chlár.  Thit an líon daoine a éisteann le clár Gerry Ryan ar RTÉ 2FM, faoi 5% ón tréimhse dheireanach.  Dea-scéala a bhí ann do Ray D’arcy, ó Today Fm, agus é ar an aon duine lasmuigh d’fhoireann RTÉ a bhain áit amach sna deich gcraoltóir ag a bhfuil an líon is mó éisteoirí.

Cé nach bhfuil RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta ná Raidió na Life 106.4 FM cláraithe le taighdeoirí an JNLR, maíonn an dá stáisiún go bhfuil arduithe suntasacha tagtha ar líon na n-éisteoirí ón am seo anuraidh.  Deir Muiris Ó Fiannachta, Bainisteoir Stáisiúin le Raidió na Life 106.4FM, ‘Tá ardú as cuimse tagtha ar líon na ndaoine a éisteann le Raidió na Life 106.4FM thar an idirlíon faoi láthair, agus is léir ón méid téacsanna agus ríomhphost a thagann isteach chuig na cláir éagsúla go bhfuil Gaeilgeoirí na príomhchathrach ag éisteacht go dílis leis an stáisiún!’

Tá tuilleadh eolais faoi na figiúirí seo le fáil ó Aoife Clabby ó Choimisiún Craolacháin na hÉireann, 01 6441200.

JNLR/TNSmrbi figures for the period July 2007-June 2008 were recently released.  These figures revealed that 85% of adults across the country listen to a mix of national, regional and local radio stations daily.

Although regional and local listenership figures have increased by 1% no difference has been noted in the listenership figures for national stations. Of national public stations, RTÉ Radio 1 held 23% of the market, RTÉ 2FM held 17% and RTÉ Lyric FM held 3%.  No change was recorded for national commercial radio stations, with Today FM and Newstalk 106-108FM holding 16% and 6% of the market share respectively.

In terms of both reach and market share almost all local stations experienced some changes, however the top five radio stations in terms of reach for this period were as follows: Highland Radio, Limerick’s Live 95Fm, Mid West Radio, WLR FM/Shannonside Northern Sound, and Tipp Fm/Radio Kerry. From a market share perspective, the top five stations were the following: Highland Radio, Mid West Radio, Shannonside/Northern Sound, Tipp Fm and Radio Kerry.

The research revealed good news for Marian Finucane whose listenership figures increased by 14,000 people from the previous period, with an average daily audience of 323,000.  Listeners to Pat Kenny also increased substantially in this period, with an average daily audience of 291.000.  Listeners to the Gerry Ryan show dropped by 5% since the previous period.  Ray D’arcy of Today Fm, was the only non-RTÉ broadcaster to rate in the top ten largest audiences.

Although neither RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta or Raidió na Life 106.4 FM are registered with the JNLR research, both stations claim to have experienced substantial increases in listenership from this time last year.  Muiris Ó Fiannachta, Station Manager of Raidió na Life 106.4FM stated, ‘There has been a significant rise in the number of people accessing Raidió na Life 106.4FM over the internet, and it is obvious from the increased number of text messages and emails that the station receives that Dublin’s Gaeilgeoirí are remaining loyal to the station!’

Further information on the JNLR research finding is available from Aoife Clabby, Broadcasting Commission of Ireland,  01 6441200.
