'An Phleist Mhór 'agus 'An Cléireach' fógartha mar buaiteorí 'Leabhar na Bliana'2008

‘An Phleist Mhór’ and ‘An Cléireach’ win Book of the Year Awards, 2008

Tugadh aitheantas d'ardcháilíocht agus do shárchaighdeán na foilsitheoireachta i nGaeilge ag an deireadh seachtaine nuair a fógraíodh buaiteoirí 'Leabhar na Bliana' ag Oireachtas na Samhna a bhí á reáchtáil i mbliana in Óstán Rochestown Park i gCorcaigh.

Bhí cuireadh ag foilsitheoirí Gaeilge ar fud na tíre leabhair a chur isteach ar dhá ghradam, Gradam Uí Shúilleabháin (Leabhar na Bliana don Léitheoir Fásta) agus Gradam Réics Carló (Leabhar na Bliana do Dhaoine Óga).  Is géar a chuaigh an iomaíocht idir na seacht leabhar mórfhiúntais a ainmníodh ar Ghearrliostaí an dá Ghradam a bhfuil ciste iomlán Eur25,000 de dhuaiseanna ann dóibh.

Bronnadh Gradam Uí Shúilleabháin (Leabhar na Bliana don Léitheoir Fásta) ar na foilsitheoirí Leabhar Breac don úrscéal 'An Cléireach' a scríobh Darach Ó Scolaí as Indreabhán, Co. na Gaillimhe. Tugtar cuntas sa leabhar ar an saol ag cléireach in Arm na hÉireann le linn ré Chromail agus faigheann an léitheoir léargas ar an tréimhse sin i stair na hEorpa nuair a bhí cúrsaí corraitheach tar éis na gCrosáidí.

Bhí moladh ar leith ag an bpainéal moltóirí do chumas an údair an léitheoir a shú isteach i gcroí an scéil trí chaint shochreidte a scríobh agus leas a bhaint as saibhreas teanga.  Bronnadh duais liteartha ar 'An Cléireach' cheana ag Oireachtas na Gaeilge 2007.

Bronnadh Gradam Réics Carló (Leabhar na Bliana do Dhaoine Óga) ar na foilsitheoirí Móinín atá lonnaithe i mBaile Uí Bheacháin don leabhar ildaite do pháistí, 'An Phleist Mhór' le Ré Ó Laighléis agus Susan Edwards. Scéal atá ann faoi bheirt pháistí ar lá fliuch. Bhí ardmholadh ag an bpainéal moltóirí don úsáid a bhaintear as friotal spleodrach onamataipéach sa leabhar seo ó Mhóinín.  Is í Emily Colenso a rinne an dearadh ar an leabhar agus cuireann an ghné sin go mór leis an téacs samhailteach chun beocht a chur sna híomhánna, sna fuaimeanna agus i gcéaparáil na leanaí.  Bhronn Uachtarán na hÉireann, Máire Mhic Ghiolla Íosa, an gradam 'An Peann faoi Bhláth' ar Ré Ó Laighléis sa bhliain 1998 mar aitheantas ar a mhórshaothair ar son na litríochta.

Recognition was given to the high standard of Irish language publications last weekend when the winners of the' Leabhar na Bliana' (Book of the Year awards) were announced at Oireachtas na Samhna which was held this year in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork.

Irish language publishers from across the country were invited to nominate books for the 2 major awards, Gradam Uí Shúilleabháin (Book of the year for the adult reader) and Gradam Réics Carlo ( Book of the year for young people). Competition was strong amongst the 7 books which were shortlisted for the 2 awards which have a total prize fund of EUR25,000.

Gradam Uí Shúilleabháin was awarded to the publishers Leabhar Breac for the novel 'An Cléireach' which was written by Darach Ó Scolaí from Indreabhán in County Galway.  The book gives an account of the life of an officer in the Irish Army during the reign of Oliver Cromwell and provides the reader with an insight into the troubled period of European History after the crusades.

The adjudicators praised the ability of Ó Scolaí in  transporting readers to the heart of the story using easily believable and rich Irish. An Cléireach won another literary prize at Oireachtas na Samhna, 2007.

Gradam Réics Carló  was awarded to Móinín Publications who are based in Loch Reasca County Clare for the illustrated book for children 'An Phleist Mhór' which was written by Ré Ó Laighléis and Susan Edwards.  This book tells the story of 2 children and their adventures on a wet rainy day.

The  judging panel praised the use of exciting language and onomatopoeia. Emily Colenso illustrated the book and her work adds to the imaginative text and instils life in the images, sounds and capers of the children.  President Mary McAleese previously awarded the 'An Peann faoi Bhláth' prize to Ré Ó Laighléis in 1998 for his achievements in Irish language literature.

2 leabhar nua foilsithe ag Cois Life

2 new books published by Cois Life

Iriseoirí Pinn na Gaeilge- an cholúnacht liteartha: critic iriseoireachta agus Filíocht Ghrá na Gaeilge/Love Poems in Irish

Tá dhá leabhar nua foilsithe ag na foilsitheoirí Cois Life le déanaí agus aimsir na Nollag ag druidim linn. Tá siad  dírithe ar dhá mhargadh faoi leith agus is léir go mbeidh an-tóir ar na leabhair seo i mbliana.

Ní hé amháin go mbeidh Filíocht Ghrá na Gaeilge oiriúnach mar bhronntanas dóibh siúd a bhfuil spéis acu san fhilíocht ach beidh an díolaim filíochta seo an-áisiúil mar uirlis dóibh siúd atá ag iarraidh a ngrágheal a mhealladh trí Ghaeilge, mar a rinne an phearsa Big sa Scannán Sex and the City lena litreacha grá!

Tá rogha leathan filíochta roghnaithe ag an eagarthóir Ciarán Mac Murchaidh  sa duanaire a tuagann léargas iontach ar phaisean agus ar neart an ghrá. Pléitear gach gné den ghrá sna dánta agus sna hamhráin seo - meidhir an ghrá óig; greann agus suairceas an ghrá; cumha agus croíbhriseadh; dúil agus grá gan fháil; agus an grá iompaithe ina fhuath.

Ar an taobh eile de beidh spéis ag mic léinn ollscoile, ag daoine atá ag obair sna meáin agus ag an lucht acadúil sa leabhar nua atá scríofa ag Regina Uí Chollatáin. Forbhreathnú criticiúil coincheapúil iltoiseach ar phrós-iriseoireacht an fichiú haois atá sa leabhar iriseoirí Pinn na Gaeilge-an Cholúnacht Liteartha;critic iriseoirachta. Cuirtear an cholúnacht i gcomhthéacs theoiric agus scríbhinní an tsaothair.
Ríomhtar na téiseanna critice, na saothair éagsúla litríochta agus léirmheastóireacht ó údair aitheanta an fichiú haois; an téamaíocht agus an eagarthóireacht a shaibhríonn a leithéid de staidéar, mar aon le meon sochtheangeolaíochta agus fealsúnacht na dtréimhsí inar scríobhadh iad.

Tá tuilleadh eolais faoin leabhar ar fáil ó na foilsitheoirí ag 353 1 2807951 agus is féidir ríomhphost a chur chuig eolas@coislife.ie

Iriseoirí Pinn na Gaeilge-an cholúnacht liteartha; critic iriseoireachta and Filíocht Ghrá na Gaeilge/Love Poems in Irish

2 new books have recenly been published by Cois Life as Christamas approaches.  They are aimed at two distinct markets and it's clear that  these books will be in demand this year.

Not only is Filíocht Ghrá na Gaeilge suitable as a present  for those who have an interest in poerty, this poerty compilation might also be a useful tool for those who are trying to seduce the object of their affection as the character Big did with love letters in the film Sex and the City.

A wide selection of poetry has been picked by the editor Ciarán Mac Murchaidh in the poerty collection which provides an insight into the passion and power of love.  Every aspect of love is discussed in these songs and poems; the mirth of young love,  humour, regret and heartbreak; unrequited love and thin line between love which has turned to hate.

On the other hand University students, Media professionals and academics will be intesetsted in the new work written by Regina Uí Chollatáin. Iriseoirí pinn na Gaeilge is a  critical, conceptual, overview of the prose writings and criticism in Irish as presented in journals and newspapers of the twentieth century. It examines the literary column as a feature of Irish-language prose and journalistic writing of the period, which has proved to be a significant field of research for contemporary students of media and literature.

The book presents the theoretical context and several excerpts treating literary and journalistic crticism, editing and terminology, along with the philosophy and sociolinguistic background of the various periods.

Further information on these two publications is availbale from Cois Life on01 2807951 and an email can be sent to eolas@coislife.ie

Oireachtas na Samhna 08: deich míle duine ag léim thart!

Oireachtas na Samhna 2008- Ten thousand ‘Jump Around’

Thug os cionn deich mile duine aghaidh ar chathair na reibiliúnach, Cathair Chorcaí, le sult a bhaint as Oireachtas na Samhna a bhí ar siúl idir an 27 Deireadh Fómhair agus an 2 Samhain 2008.

Tá an tOireachtas ag dul ó neart go neart le 111 bliain anuas agus bhí  níos mó iomaitheoirí istigh ar na comórtais i mbliana ná mar a bhí riamh cheana.  Bhí réimse leathan comórtas ann sna healaíona, do dhaoine fásta agus do dhaoine óga sa damhsa ar an sean-nós, san amhránaíocht agus sa scéalaíocht.

Ba  é an comórtas amhránaíochta ar an sean-nós, Corn Uí Riada, buaic chlár comórtas an Oireachtais.  Bhí  iar-bhuaiteoirí chomh maith le hiomaitheoirí nua in iomaíocht lena chéile i stíleanna éagsúla na réigiún d'fhonn an corn agus an clú a théann leis a bhuachan.  Ba é Ciarán Ó Con Cheanainn ón Spidéal i gcontae na Gaillimhe a bhuaigh an comórtas agus ba ghéar an iomaíocht a bhí ann idir  Máire Ní Chéileachair ó Chorcaigh a chríochnaigh sa dara háit agus Stiofán Ó Cualáin ó Leitir Mealláin a chríochnaigh sa tríú háit.

Don dream óg a bhí i láthair bhí amhrán eile comhaimseartha á canadh acu ag club na féile nuair a thug an fuireseoir aitheanta Des Bishop cuairt ar an gclub. Bhí an club dubh le daoine agus iad ag 'léim thart' agus ag rince 'ballaí Luimnigh' agus 'ionsaí na hInse' oíche Shathairn san Óstán Rochestown Park.

'Sa bhliain 2005 a bhí an tOireachtas i gCorcaigh go deireadh agus d'éirigh chomh maith sin leis go bhfuil sé ina ábhar cainte fós ag muintir na háite agus ag an gcuairteoir chomh maith,''a deir Liam Ó Maolaodha, Stiúrthóir Oireachtas na Gaeilge.

Is léir gurb amhlaidh an cás i mbliana agus beidh muintir na Gaeilge ag glaoch ar gach óstán i Leitir Ceannain, Contae Dhún na nGall an tseachtain seo lena seomraí a chur in áirithe, áit a mbeidh an chéad Oireachtas na Samhna á reáchtáil i mí Dheireadh Fómhair, 2009.

Over ten thousand people visited the rebel city in Cork to attend the events of Oireachtas na Samhna which took place between 27 October and 2 November 2008.

The Oireachtas has gone from strength to strength over the last 111 years and more competitors entered this years competitions than ever before. A wide range of competitions took place in the arts for both young and old in sean-nós dancing, singing and storytelling.

Corn Uí Riada, the sean-nós singing competition was the highlight of the Oireachtas programme. Former winners as well as new competitors took part showcasing different styles from the regions in order to win the cup and recognition that goes with it.  Ciaran Ó Con Cheanainn from An Spidéal in County Galway won the competition and there was strong competition between Máire Ní Chéileachair from Cork who finished in second place and Stiofán Ó Cualáin from Leitir Mealláin who finished in third place.

For the younger people who were in attendance it was a slightly more contemporary song which was on their lips when the famous comedian Des Bishop visited Club na Féile. The Club was packed with people as they 'jumped around' and danced to the 'Walls of Limerick' and the 'Siege of Ennis' on Saturday night in the Rochestown Park Hotel.

'2005 was the last year that the Oireachtas came to Cork and it was such a success that it still spoken of by local people and the visitors as well' stated Liam Ó Maoladha, the Director of Oireachtas na Gaeilge.

It's clear that this will be said of this years Oireachtas as well as Irish speakers start ringing every hotel in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal this week in an effort to pre-book their rooms for next years Oireachtas which will take place in the town next October.

Sall Chugatsa; Peadar Ó Brádaigh, Shannonside/Northern Sound FM

1. Céard is ainm duitse agus cad as duit agus cé leis a bhfuil tú ag craoladh?

Is as Cill na Leice, Co an Chabháin dom agus táim ag craoladh  le Shannonside/Northern Sound le tamall fada anuas- ar feadh tréimhse deich mbliana, mar sin tá seantaithí ar chúrsaí raidió anois agam!

2. Inis dom faoi do chlár raidió! Cathain a bhíonn sé ar siúl?

Craoltar Gaeilge go Leor gach Domhnach ag a 9.30i.n. ar Shannonside/Northernsound FM. Mar a deirimid ar an gclár - má tá Gaeilge líofa agat nó dá mba mhaith leat feabhas a chur ar do chuid Gaeilge seo é an clár duit. Gach seachtain bíonn comhrá agam féin agus mo chara  Matt Ó Nuallain, ag cur eolais ar fáil faoi imeachtaí áitiúla agus craic don lucht eisteachta sa chlár, Gaeilge go Leor.

3 Cé hé nó cé hí an t-aoi is mó a bhfuil fonn ort agallamh a chur air nó uirthi i nGaeilge?

Ba bhreá liom Liam Ó Maolmhichíl, iar-Rúnaí leis an gCumann Lúthchleas Gael a chur faoi agallamh; is as contae Longfoirt ó dhúchas é mar sin bheadh spéis agamsa agus ag an lucht éisteachta ann, dár ndóigh bheadh sé in ann scéal nó dhó a insint dúinn!

4 Cé hé nó hí an t-aoi is fearr a bhí ar an gclár agat?

Thaitin sé go mór liom nuair a chuir mé Tomas Donncha Ó Ráth Chairn, Contae na Mí faoi agallamh tamall ó shin. Is éachtach an cainteoir é , tá sé éirimiúil agus sothuigthe.

5. Cén clár raidió is fearr leatsa?
Dé ghnáth is breá liom a bheith ag éisteacht leis an gceol traidisiúnta a bhíonn á chraoladh ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

6.. Céard é an spreagadh is mó duitse agus tú i mbun craolta?

Is dócha gurb é an rud is mó a spreagann mé ná an comhrá leis na héisteoirí  agus an t-aiseolas a fhaigheann tú ón lucht éisteachta ó am go ham.  Ina theannta sin táimid an-bhródúil as an duais a bhuamar i mbliana. Bhuaigh  an clár seo duais Ghlór na nGael agus bronnadh an duais ar Shannonside Northern Sound mar gheall ar an obair a rinneadar leis an nGaeilge a chur chun cinn. Ba mhór an onóir é seo do gach duine ar an gclár atá ag iarraidh labhairt na  Gaeilge a fheabhsú i Ros Comáin, Liatroim, Longfort, Cábhán agus Muineacháin.

1. What is you name, where are you from and who are you broadcasting with?

I'm from Kilnaleck in Co. Cavan and I have been broadcasting with Shannonside/Northern Sound for a long time now-for over ten years so I have  a lot of experience at this stage.

2. Tell me about your radio programme. When is it broadcast?

Gaeilge Go Leor is broadcast every Sunday at 9.30 p.m. on Shannonside/Northern Sound FM. As we say on the programme if you have fluent Irish or just want to improve the Irish that you have this is the programme for you. Every week myself and my friend Matt Ó Nuallain chat about various events that are happening locally and we also give out information to our listeners on our programme Gaeilge go Leor.

3. Who is the guest whom you would most like to interview?

I would love to interview Liam Mulvhill, former secretary with the GAA, he hails from Longford originally so I would have great interest in him and so would my listeners and no doubt he would have a story or two to tell.

4 Who was the best guest you ever interviewed on your programme?

I really enjoyed the interview I did with Tomas Donncha from Ráth Chairn in the Meath Gaeltacht a while ago He is a very entertaining speaker and is intelligent and easy to understand.

5. What is your favourite radio programme?

I usually listen to traditional music which is is broadcast on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

6. What is your greatest inspiration ?

I suppose that the thing which most inspires me is the conversation and feedback I get from listeners from time to time. As well as this we are very proud of the prize which we won this year. The programme won a Glór na nGael prize which was awarded to Shannonside/Northern Sound for the work they did to promote Irish locally.  This was a great honour for all those involved in the programme who wish to improve the amount of Irish spoken in Roscommon, Letitrim, Longford, Cavan and Monaghan.

Ar scáth a chéile- Tionscnamh Raidió Pobail trasteorann

Cross-Border Radio Initiative

Chuir an tAire Gnóthaí Pobail, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta, Éamon Ó Cuív TD, fáilte an mhí seo caite roimh thionscnamh raidió pobail trasteorann atá á mhaoiniú ag an nGníomhaireacht Ultach-Albanach.

Thar dheireadh seachtaine, ghlac grúpa pobail ó Bhaile Monaidh, Co. Aontroma, páirt i gceardlann traenála trí lá le baill foirne ó Raidió Pobail Chonamara, Co. na Gaillimhe.

Bunaithe ag an nGníomhaireacht Ultach-Albanach sa bhliain 2007, tá fUSe fm (gearr do ‘for Ulster Scots enthusiasts’) ag craoladh ar bhonn páirtaimseartha, ach tá an stáisiún ag breathnú anois ar an tseirbhís a leathnú go craoltóireacht lánaimseartha.

Chuir baill foirne ó Raidió Pobail Chonamara traenáil ar fáil agus thaispeán siad don ghrúpa an teicneolaíocht nua atá in úsáid acu chun seirbhís lánaimseartha a chur ar fáil.

Éamon Ó Cuív TD, the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, last month  welcomed a cross-border community radio initiative funded by the Ulster Scots Agency.

Over the weekend, a community group from Ballymoney, Co. Antrim will take part in a three-day training workshop with staff from Connemara Community Radio, Co. Galway.  Piloted by the Ulster Scots Agency in 2007, fUSe fm (short for ‘for Ulster Scots enthusiasts’) has been running on a part-time basis but is now considering moving to fulltime broadcasting.

Connemara Community Radio staff  provided training and introduced the group to the new technology they use to deliver a fulltime station.
