Comóradh Bhás Pheig Sayers

Commeroration of the death of Peig Sayers

Ar feadh na mblianta dá ndéarfá le duine go raibh spéis agat sa Ghaeilge bheadh amhras orthu. ‘Ach muise céard faoin leabhar uafásach sin - Peig agus an chráiteacht a d’fhulaing sí. B’éigean dúinn é a léamh ar scoil agus níor thaitin an teanga dhubhach sin liom ó shin ’

Is dócha gur cheangail cuid mhaith daoine an bhochtaineacht, saol na tuaithe agus an Ghaeilge nuair a tagraíodh do shaol Pheig ach le tamall anuas ar a laghad tá an íomhá dhiúltach imithe agus tá tuiscint níos fearr ag daoine ar an nGaeilge ach fós féin ar na deacrachtaí a bhí ag muintir an Bhlascaoid blianta ó shin.

Ach an raibh na  fíricí seo a leanas ar eolas agat faoin mbean úd roimhe seo?

  • D’éag  Peig in Ospidéal An Daingin ar an 8 Nollaig 1958 leathchéad bliain ó shin. Agus bhí sé dall nuair a cailleadh í.
  • An raibh a fhios agat nár scríobh sí leabhar riamh? Is amhlaidh  a dheachtaigh sí a cuid eachtraithe agus scéalta dá mac, Mícheál Ó Guithín, 'Maidhc File' agus do dhaoine eile. Mar sin is údar í seachas scríbhneoir.
  •  Bhailigh an béaloideasaí,  Seosamh Ó Dálaigh, suas le 300 scéal uaithi.
  • Níor aistríodh a leabhar, 'Peig', go Béarla go dtí 1993, cé gur foilsíodh  an bunleagan Gaeilge i 1936.

Reáchtálfar comóradh 50 Bliain Bás Pheig Sayer in Ionad an Bhlascaoid i nDún Chaoin, Contae Chiarraí  ar an 7 Nollaig agus beidh tuilleadh fíricí faoi shaol Pheig léirithe ar an lá sin. Tá tuilleadh eolais ar fáil ó Mhícheál de Mórdha ó Ionad an Bhlascaoid agus beidh seisean in ann agallamh a shocrú  micheal.demordha@opw.ie. Tá clár an chomóraidh ar fáil i bhféilire na Gaeilge ar gaelport.com anseo.

Dóibh siúd nach mbeidh in ann bheith i  láthair ag an  gcomóradh oifigiúil i gCorca Dhuibhne craolfar scannán doiciméadach Bhreandáin Feiritéar  “Peig Sayers - 'Scéalaí' ar theilifís RTÉ 1 oíche Luain, 8 Nollaig, 2008.

For years if you said that you had in interest in Irish, some people might be doubtful. 'But what about that awful book-Peig and all the suffering she had in her life. We had to read that in school and I didn't like that depressing language since then.'

Many people connected poverty, rural life and the Irish language  together whenever referring to Peig's life but in recent times that negative image has disappered and people have a greater understanding of the language and also of the  particular hardship suffered by the people of the Blasket island many years ago.

But did you know the following facts about Peig before now?

  • Peig died in Dingle hospital on the 8th December 1958, 50 years ago and she was blind when she died.
  • Did you know that she never wrote a book in her lifetime? Instead she recited old tales and her own stories to her son Mícheál Ó Guithín, 'Maidhc File' and to other people, so she was an author rather than a writer.
  • The folklorist Seosamh Ó Dálaigh collected more that 300 stories from Peig.
  • The book 'Peig' was not translated to English until 1993 even though the intitial Irish edition was published in 1936.

A commemoration celebrating 50 years since the death of Peig will take place in Ionad an Bhlascaoid in Dún Chaoin, Co. Kerry on the 7 December and more facts about the life of Peig will be discussed on the day.  Further information is available from Mícheál de Mórdha from Ionad an Bhlascaoid  micheal.demordha@opw.ie and he will be available to arrange interviews.  The programme of events is available in the Irish language calender of events on gaelport.com.

For those who can not attend the official commemoration a special documentary made by Breandán Feiritéar 'Peig Sayers- Scéalaí' will be broadcast on RTE 1 on Monday 8 December, 2008.

John Spillane- Irish songs we learned at school

John Spillane: Irish songs we learned at school.

Ar chuala tú an cogar mogar faoin albam nua atá eisithe ag an bhfonnadóir John Spillane? Bhuel níl aon dabht ach go bhfuil an gnóthadóir díograiseach i mbarr a réime arís leis an eisiúint is déanaí.

Ach ní  he amháin go mbíonn an Corcaíoch gnóthach agus a chuid eisiúntí féin á gcur chun cinn aige - ar nós Hey Dreamer agus My Dark Rosaleen and the Island of Dreams  - agus ag cur ceoil ar liricí breátha An Gaelic Hit Factory- bíonn sé ag obair mar láithreoir raidió ar Anocht FM ar Raidió na Gaeltachta gach seachtain chomh maith.

Dhírigh an togra is déanaí  ar réimse ceoil a raibh neamhaird déanta air le tamall fada anuas- na hamhráin thriaidisiúnta Ghaeilge a múineadh sa scoil fadó ach nach raibh ar fáil le chéile i bhfoinse amháin go dtí seo.

Ar ndóigh bhí sé deacair teacht ar chóip taifeadta d’amhráin cosúil le Báidín Fheilimí, An Maidrín Rua, An Poc Ar Buile roimhe seo ach tá na hamhráin sin agus amhráin eile amhail Trasna na dTonnta, Chill Chais agus Níl 'na lá ar fáil sa dlúthdhiosca nua seo agus curtha i láthair  i stíl shnasta shothuigthe ag John Spillane agus na daltaí ón rang ceoil i nGaelcholáiste Choilm ó  Bhaile an Chollaigh, Co Chorcaí agus a múinteoir ceoil Catherine Frost.

Deir Spillane: 'Ba mhór an sásamh a thug sé dom  taifeadadh a dhéanamh ar na hamhráin seo agus iad a athfhionnadh arís. Thaitin taifeadadh  an amhráin 'An Poc ar Buile' go mór liom toisc go raibh Seán Ó Sé chomh cineálta agus gur chan sé ar an amhrán liom agus tá Peadar Ó Riada ag seinm an phianó ann agus chas a athair ar an gceirnín sna seascaidí agus sheinn Mel Mercier an bodhrán agus arís sheinn a athair Peadar Mercier ar an gcéad cheirnín! Go raibh míle maith agaibh.'

Is albam gleoite é seo a bheadh oiriúnach mar bhronntanas dóibh siúd atá maoithneach faoina laethanta scoile agus dóibh siúd atá ag iarraidh na hamhráin a mhúineadh dá gcuid paistí toisc go bhfuil na liricí ar fad ar fáil sa chlúdach. Cé go gceapfaí a mhalairt, cuimhneofar ar na hamhráin go léir!

Did you hear all the talk about the new album released by singer-songwriter John Spillane? Well there is no doubt that the hardest working man in the Irish music scene is in top form with his latest release.

Not only is the Corkman busy promoting  his own releases such as ‘Hey Dreamer’ and ‘My Dark Rosaleen and the Island of Dreams’ as well as putting music to the lyrics in the Gaelic Hit Factory, he also works as a radio presenter on Anocht FM on Raidió na Gaeltachta every week.

However, his latest project concentrates on a genre of music which has been ignored in recent times - the Irish songs which were taught in school but which were not available together before this.

This is a very special compilation of children's songs that we learned (or didn't learn!) at school. Finding recordings of these great old Irish tunes had been difficult until now, with favourites such as Báidín Fheilimí, An Maidrín Rua, An Poc Ar Buile and many, many more, but these songs are now available on one special disk, recorded beautifully by John Spillane and friends and the First year music class of Gaelcholáiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Co. Cork and their teacher Catherine Frost.

Says John:  'It was a great pleasure to record and rediscover these beautiful songs. The recording of An Poc Ar Buile was especially lovely, as Seán Ó Sé was so kind as to sing it with me, and we had Peadar Ó Riada on piano, whose father Seán played on the original recording from the 60's, also Mel Mercier on bodhrán and bones, whose father Peadar Mercier played on the original! Go Raibh Míle Maith agaibh!'

This is a charming album and will be a great gift for those nostalgic about their childhood songs, and also great for teaching children these songs that could sadly be dying out without these lovely recordings. The lyrics for the songs are availabole in the album as well. You'll remember more songs than you think!

Comprising two Louis Marcus films, Christy Ring (1964) and Peil (1962), this DVD, released by Gael Linn features the sporting greats of the 1960s in both hurling and football. Additional material consists of evocative Amharc Éireann newsreel footage of major Gaelic games from the years 1959 to 1963.

Gael Linn originally commissioned and  broadcast the films in the early sixties in cinemas around Ireland. This is the first time these films have been brought out on DVD and come with full English subtitles.

Each film has an instructional section at its core, preceded by a nostalgic look back at the past, followed by extended highlights of a major game. Both films feature colour footage from games rich in atmosphere and detail, accompanied by a rousing soundtrack of music from the Artane Band.

Christy Ring (1964)
The film Christy Ring features sequences from the 1954 All-Ireland when Christy made history by winning his eighth All-Ireland medal. Christy then gives detailed coaching tips in the film which will be of great interest to young players and fans alike. There is extensive coverage in colour of the 1960 National League Final between Cork and Tipperary where Christy displays his prowess.

Peil (1962)
In  this film, in order to demonstrate Gaelic football skills, a cross-section of the best players from the top teams was chosen.

Sinéad Ní Churnáin, Phantom FM

Sinéad Ní Churnáin, Phantom FM

Gach mí iarraimid ar chraoltóir le Gaeilge cúpla ceist a fhreagairt i leith a t(h)aithí chraoltóireachta.

1. Céard is ainm duitse agus cad as duit agus cé leis a bhfuil tú ag craoladh?

Is mise Sinéad Ní Churnáin, is as Ciarraí Thiar mé ó dhúchas agus táim ag craoladh le Phantom 105.2FM

2. Cé chomh fada is atá tú ag craoladh i nGaeilge?

Nuair a thosaigh me ag obair sna meáin cúpla bliain ó shin chaitheas bliain ag láithriú Cúla 4 in éineacht le Hiúdaí ar TG4. Bhogas go Bleá Cliath chun dul ag obair le Dustin in RTÉ, táim ag scríobh alt nó dhó don iris 'Nós'. Thosaigh mé a ag láithriú 'Carraig Crua' le Phantom 105.2FM timpeall mí ó shin agus táim ag baint an-sásamh as!

3. Inis dúinn faoi do chlár raidió! Cathain a bhíonn sé ar siúl?

Bíonn 'Carraig Crua' ar súil gach maidin Domhnaigh ag a 9r.n. go dtí a 10r.n. Casaim ceol Éireannach ó bhannaí agus ó cheoltóirí atá lasmuigh de Bhleá Cliath.

4. Cé chomh fada is atá sé á  chraoladh anois?
     Timpeall bliain

5. Inis dúinn faoin lucht éisteachta. An bhfaightear aiseolas dearfach uatha -an mbíonn siad ag cur téacsteachtaireachtaí isteach chuig an gclár?

Seolann siad téacsanna le moltaí agus le hiarratais ach formhór an ama bíonn siad ag luí siar sa leaba ag éisteacht leis an gceol agus á thógáil go breá réidh tar éis na hoíche roimh ré!

6. An mbíonn tú ag cur an chláir i láthair nó a mbíonn tú ag obair mar léiritheoir ann?

Tá sé suas dom féin cén rogha ceoil a bhíonn ar an gclár, scríobhaim mo chuid nasc féin. Táim i bhfeighil na teicneolaíochta chomh maith!

7. An ndearna tú cúrsa sa chraoltóireacht riamh? An gceapann tú go bhfuil a leithéid de chúrsa riachtanach do chraoltóirí anois?

Dheineas céim sa Ghaeilge agus sa Bhéarla in OÉ, Gaillimh, ansin dheineas an ADCF, cúrsa iarchéime sa chumarsáid sa Ghaillimh leis. Táim an-sásta go ndearna me an cúrsa sin mar thug sé léargas leathan dom ar chúrsaí teicniúla agus acadúla. Le linn an chúrsa rinne me aiste thaighde ar Alt 31 agus an tionchar a bhí aige ar chraoltóireacht sa tír seo- bhí se fíorshuimiúil!

8. An bhfuil aon áiseanna ar líne nó áiseanna eile a mbaineann tú úsáid  astu agus tú ag ullmhú don chlár?

Gan dabht bainim úsáid as Myspace chun fáil amach faoi bhannaí agus chun úsáid a bhaint as an bhfoclóir Gaeilge leis!

Every month we ask a different Irish Language broadcaster to tell us a little about their experience as a broadcaster.

1. What is your name, where are you from and who do you broadcast with?

I'm Sinéad Ní Churnáin, I'm originally from West Kerry and I'm broadcasting with Phantom 105.2 FM

2. How long are you broadcasting in Irish?

When I first started working in the media a few years ago, I presented Cúla 4 with Hiúdaí on TG4.  Then I moved to Dublin to work with Dustin in RTÉ and I write the occasional article for Nós mag.  I started presenting 'Carraig cria'woth Phantom 105.2FM about a month ago and I'm really enjoying it!

3. Tell us about your radio programme? When is it broadcast?

Carraig Crua is broadcast every Sunday from 9a.m.-10 a.m.  I play Irish music from bands and musicians outside of Dublin.

4. How long has this programme been on the air?
It's been broadcast for over a year or thereabouts,

5.Tell us about the listeners? Do you get positive feedback from them like text messages etc?

They send in texts with recommendations and requests but most of the time they are taking it easy in bed after Saturday night.

6. Do you present the programme or are you involved in production?

It's up to myself to choose the music, I write my own links and I'm also in charge of the technology!

7.Did you ever do a broadcasting course? Do you think that courses like this are essential for broadcasters now?

I completed a Degree in Irish and English in NUIG and then I did the Higher Diploma in Communications, a postgrad in communications in Galway.  I'm really happy that I did this course as it gave me an insight into the technical and academic aspects of broadcasting. During the course I did an essay on Section 31 and the impact it had on broadcasting in the country which was really interesting

8. Are there any online resources or other resourses which you use when you prepare for your programme?

I usually go on myspace to check out new bands and get Irish dictionarys on the internet.

Stillwater communications is currently researching Irish language programmes in the commercial and community radio sector on behalf of the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland.

The aim of this research is to obtain information which is both relevant and useful to help the Commission support the development of new Irish language programming.

Stillwater Communications will be in contact with your radio station in the coming weeks to conduct this research. An online survey will be launched, which will survey every local, regional and community radio station in the first week of December.

The BCI is looking for your support and would be delighted if your station could fill in the survey. The survey will be conducted on an anonymous basis so please be as honest as possible in your answers.
