Put pen to paper, for An Chuairt poetry competition!

Tá Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge ag reáchtáil Comórtas Filíochta le linn Chuairt na bhFilí Albanacha ar Éirinn arís i mbliana.

Ba é anuraidh an chéad bhliain den chomórtas agus ó tharla gur léiríodh an oiread sin spéise ann agus gur ócáid fhíorthaitneamhach a bhí ann shocraigh An Chomhdháil é a chur ar siúl arís i mbliana. Is comórtas filíochta dátheangach atá i gceist, agus is féidir le filí dánta nuachumtha i nGaeilge nó i nGàidhlig na hAlban a chur isteach ar an gcomórtas, ach leagan Béarla a chur ar fáil chomh maith.

Namhaid don Phobal- léiriú nua stáitse de chuid Thaibhdhearc na Gaillimhe agus Moonfish

Namhaid don Phobal- a new stage production by Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe and Moonfish

Beidh Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe, amharclann náisiúnta na Gaeilge ag léiriú ’Namhaid don Phobal’ leagan Gaeilge de dhráma Henrik iBesen  le fotheidil Bhéarla  sa Dubhlann i gCathair na Gaillimhe agus i mBaile Átha Cliath le linn Sheachtain na Gaeilge agus le cuidiú na bhfotheideal, bainfidh gach duine ar suim leo an cultúr Gaelach agus an Ghaeilge taitneamh as, lucht foghlamtha na teanga agus iad siúd a chuirfeadh fáilte roimh aistriúchán ar chorrfhocal anseo agus ansiúd nó ar leagan cainte.

Leagan nua-aoiseach spreagúil den dráma cáiliúil, a bhfuil macallaí ann den ghéarchéim a tharla i gcúrsaí uisce i nGaillimh le gairid. Tugann an comhfhiontar seo   an chéad cheann idir an Taibhdhearc agus an compántas Moonfish Theatre – cuireadh don phobal, idir lucht labhartha na Gaeilge agus an dream nach bhfuil an teanga ar a dtoil acu, sult a bhaint as an dráma agus machnamh a dhéanamh ar na ceisteanna a chuirtear ann.
Suite i mbaile beag cois farraige, déanann Namhaid don Phobal cur síos ar a dtiteann amach nuair a thagann an dochtúir áitiúil ar nimh i gcóras uisce an bhaile, rud a d'fhéadfadh deireadh a chur le heacnamaíocht turasóireachta an bhaile.  Ar chóir dó an scéal a scaoileadh leis an bpobal, nó éisteacht le comhairle a dheartháir (Méara an bhaile) agus a bhéal a choinneáil dúnta ...?

Tá na haisteoirí aitheanta stáitse agus scáileáin Brendan Conroy, Peadar Ó Treasaigh agus Donncha Crowley (triúr a chonacthas le gairid sa scannán ‘Kings’ ar TG4 aimsir Nollag) i bpríomhpháirteanna, mar atá Bríd Ní Neachtain (Juno and the Paycock The Lyric Theatre, Woman and Scarecrow (Amharclann na Mainistreach), Dancing at Lughnasa agus Cré na Cille). Tá aithne mhaith freisin ar Phádraic Ó Tuairisc, Darach Ó Dubháin (a bhí ag ‘rapáil’ le Des Bishop ar an gclár faisnéise de chuid RTÉ 'In ainm an Fada'), ar Shéamuis Ó hAodha agus ar Ionia Ní Chróinín.

Cé go léirítear ‘Namhaid don Phobal’ go minic san Iorua agus thar lear níl an oiread sin eolais ar an dráma in Éirinn. An ócáid dheireanach ar cuireadh ar stáitse é go gairmiúil sa tír seo ba leagan Gaeilge é a rinne An Taibhdhearc i 1948.

Beidh an dráma ar siúl sa Dubhlann, i nGaillimh 4 - 8 Márta, agus in Amharclann Axis i mBaile Átha Cliath 11 – 12 Márta.

Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe, the national Irish language Theatre will bring Namhaid don Phobal, the Irish language version of Henrik ibsens drama ‘Enemy of the People’  with English subtitles to the stage in the Black Box in Galway city and Dublin during Seachtain na Gaeilge and with the help of the subtitles, everyone who has an interest in Irish culture and in Irish will enjoy the production including learners of the language and those who wish to get a translation for the odd phrase.

This is a contemporary and inspiring adaptation of the renowned drama which resonates with the water crisis which happened in Galway city recently.
This new co-production, the first between An Taibhdhearc and the Moonfish Theatre invites the public, both Irish speakers and those who have no Irish, to enjoy the drama and think about the questions raised in it.

Set in a small coastal village, Namhaid don Phobal tells the story of the consequences when the local Doctor finds traces of poison in the local water supply which puts the tourist industry of the village in jeopardy. Should the public be informed of the danger or should the Doctor listen to advice of his brother, the Mayor the town, and say nothing?

The production contains some of the most recognized faces from stage and screen with Breandan Conroy, Peadar Ó Treasaigh and Donncha Crowley (recently seen in the film Kings which was broadcast on TG4 over Christmas) with Bríd Ní Neachtain (Juno and the Paycock The Lyric Theatre, Woman and Scarecrow (The abbey theatre), Dancing at Lughnasa and  Cré na Cille) taking a leading role in the action. Páraic ó Tuairisc, Darach ó Dubháin (who rapped with Des Bishop in the  RTÉ series in the Name of the Fada) and Séamas Ó hAodha and Ionia Ní Chrónáin are also recognised acting talents.

Even though ‘Enemy of the People’ is a common production in Norway and in other countries the drama is not as well known in Ireland.  The last professional production of the drama was the Irish adaptation which was produced by An Taibhdhearc in 1948.

The drama will take place in the Black Box in Galway between 4-8 March and in the Axis Theatre Ballymun between 11-12 March.

Mise Éire: Aitheantas do George Morrision, Stiúrthóir

Mise Éire: Director George Morrison Recognised

Bronnadh duais ghnóthachtáil saoil ar George Morrison, an saineolaí  a bhfuil fad a shaoil caite aige i léiriúcháin chláir faisnéise ag searmanas bronnta an IFTA i mBaile Átha Cliath ag deireadh na seachtaine seo caite.

Tá cáil ar Morrison dá léiriúcháin ó na 1950í agus 1960í agus is iad an dá scannán Saoirse agus Mise Éire a dhírigh ar Chogadh na Saoirse agus Éirí Amach na Cásca 1916 is mó a tharraing cáil ar an stiúrthóir.

Taispeánadh an scannán Mise Éire den chéad uair ag Féile Scannánaíochta Chorcaí i 1959 , eisíodh  go poiblí é go luath i 1960 agus bhí clú ar an scannán ós rud é gurbh é an chéad scannán fada Gaeilge é a eisíodh riamh agus  ba é an chéad scannán Gaeilge é le scór a  bhí tionlactha ag ceolfhoireann iomlán.

Stiúrtha ag Morrision, d’éirigh go maith leis an scannán agus deirtear go minic gur léirigh an scannán an tsuim a bhí ann sa Ghaeilge agus san athbheochan teanga  a bhí ag tarlú sna seascaidí. Tá clú ar theicnicí  úra an stiúrthóra freisin agus  go háirithe ar an gcaoi ar baineadh leas as ábhar cartlainne le scéal a insint  agus imeachtaí stairiúla a léiriú.

Léirigh an t-ábhar cartlainne scéal a bhain le scór bliain idir 1890 agus 1918 agus mar chuid den scéal  léirigh sé athbheochan na Gaeilge agus athbheochan spéise i  gcultúr na tíre,  an ról a bhí ag Conradh na Gaeilge agus an Cumann Lúthchleas Gael agus forbairt an náisiúnachais sa tréimhse chorraitheach sin.

Tá an scannán Mise Éire ath-eisithe ag Gael Linn, an eagraíocht Ghaeilge a léirigh an scannán ar dtús. Tá tuilleadh eolais faoi Mise Éire ar fáil ó Antoine Ó Coileáin, Príomhfheidhmeannach Gael Linn trí r-phost a sheoladh chuig antoine@gael-linn.ie

Veteran Irish documentary film maker, George Morrison was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at last weekend’s IFTA awards ceremony.

Morrison is best known for his work in the 1950’s and 1960’s with the films Saoirse and Mise Éire which told the story of the Easter Rising and the War of Independence.

First shown at the Cork Film Festival in September 1959 and put on general release in early 1960, Mise Éire, was groundbreaking on two fronts, being the first full-length film to be released in the Irish language and the first ever to be scored for a full orchestra.

Directed by Geogre Morrison, the  success  of the film has been seen to be a central indicator of the revival of the language in the mid twentieth century. Its renown also rests on its director’s then relatively novel technique of recounting historical events entirely through existing archive material covering twenty  years from the 1890s to 1918.

Mise Éire was recently re-released  on DVD by Gael Linn who originally produced Mise Éire. Further information about Mise Éire is available from Antoine Ó Coileáin,  CEO of Gael Linn by emailing antoine@gael-linn.ie

Máiréad Uí Dhomhnaill, Caifé Cois Life

Mairéad Uí Dhomhnaill, Caifé Cois Life

Labhair Cogar le Máiréad Uí Dhomhnaill, léiritheoir na sraithe raidió  is mó atá  i mbéal  an phobail Ghaeilge sa phríomhchathair na laethanta seo, is é sin ‘ Caifé Cois Life’ a bheidh á chraoladh ar an stáisiún pobail Raidió na Life go ceann dhá sheachtain déag an t-earrach seo.

Fuair an tsraith maoiniú faoin scéim mhaoinithe Fuaim agus Fís arna riaradh ag Coimisiún Craolacháin na hÉireann (BCI) agus thug Máiréad leid nó dhó dúinn mar gheall ar conas tabhairt faoi iarratas a chur isteach ar an scéim mhaoinithe seo!

Ar dtús míníonn sí an coincheap a bhí taobh thiar den tionscnamh raidió. ‘Bhuel bhí sé  bunaithe ar an gCaifé Gorm, a bhí ar bun san ardchathair ag deireadh na n-ochtóidí. Ag an am spleodrach sin bhí daoine óga cosúil le Liam Ó Maonlaoi agus Michael Davitt i mbarr a réime agus bhí dlúthbhaint idir an Caifé sin agus an tOireachtas. Reáchtáladh an oíche filíochta agus cheoil sin i gcaifé i Raghnallach i nDeisceart Bhaile Átha Cliath agus bhí an-chomhluadar agus atmaisféar iontach ann. Thaitin an Caifé Gorm go mór liom agus an chaoi a raibh an  fhilíocht agus an ceol ann agus sa chaoi ar léigh filí nua-aimseartha a gcuid filíochta os ard agus an lucht éisteachta in ann ról lárnach a ghlacadh san oíche.

Ba iad an t-atmaisféar beo agus an lucht éisteachta beoga is mó a chuir beocht leis an bhfilíocht agus nuair a mhachnaigh sí ar shraith raidió a thaifeadadh bhí sí ag iarraidh go ndéanfaí taifeadadh air os comhair lucht éisteachta beo in ionad é a thaifeadadh sa stiúideo.

Mar léiritheoir agus láithreoir neamhspleách ba í an chéad chéim eile ná ionad oiriúnach lárnach a roghnú agus thug  sé sin dúshlán do Mháiréad agus do Dheirdre Donnelly, an páirtnéir eile sa chomhlacht léiriúcháin ‘Scéal Eile’.

‘Bhí an t-ádh orainn go bhfuaireamar deis taifeadadh a dhéanamh i Halla an Fhorais, i gCearnóg Mhuirfean i mBaile Átha Cliath. Bhí an áit an-oiriúnach agus é chomh lárnach agus lom agus ní raibh orainn ach cuid de na soilse a bhogadh agus an trealamh a fháil ar cíos.  Tá Raidió na Life lonnaithe san fhoirgneamh céanna agus mar sin bhíomar in ann teicneoir a fhostú ó Raidió na Life ós rud é nach mbíonn Deirdre ná mé féin ag plé le teicneolaíocht go minic.’

Is léir gur chuir  muintir na cathrach spéis sa tionscnamh mar tháinig idir tríocha agus seasca daoine chuig gach ócáid, cé go raibh siad á dtaifeadadh i lár an gheimhridh agus ní raibh an aimsir rófhabhrach.

Mar a nochtann Máiréad: ‘Bhí sólaistí an-tábhachtach sa chomhthéacs seo, bhí an lucht éisteachta ag cabhrú linn agus taifeadadh ar siúl mar sin bhí fear fostaithe gach oíche le sólaistí a chur ar fáil agus chinntigh sé sin go raibh atmaisféar neamhfhoirmiúil cairdiúil ann ag gach ócáid.’

Léiríonn Máiréad nach raibh sé deacair teacht ar fhilí agus rannpháirtithe ach oiread. ‘Ní fheadair cén fáth ar dhíríomar ar mhéid áirithe filí, tá an t-uafás filí Gaeilge amuigh ansin agus táim cinnte go mbeifeá in ann dul sa seans agus cláir eile a thaifeadadh gan stró sa Daingean, i gConamara agus i nDún na Gall, nó fiche clár eile a thaifeadadh gan mórán dua. Bheifeá ag ceapadh go mbeadh sé deacair filí a dheimhniú do thionscnamh mar seo, go háirithe sula bhfuil maoiniú faighte go hoifigiúil agat, ach bhí an t-ádh orainn go raibh siad chomh toilteanach.'

Maidir leis an scéim Fuaim agus Fís míníonn sí gur bhunaigh sí agus Deirdre Donnelly comhlacht léiriúcháin, ‘Scéal Eile’ sular chuir siad iarratas isteach. Bhí neart cúiseanna leis sin, mhínigh sí go raibh an córas níos trédhearcaí dá bharr, agus go raibh bunús airgeadais níos fearr leis an iarratas dá mbeadh comhlacht taobh thiar de in áit an duine aonair.

Míníonn  sí freisin: ‘tá neart páipéarachais i gceist le hiarratas agus is í an chomhairle is fearr ar féidir liom a thabhairt do dhaoine ná suí síos le duine eile agus tú ag dul tríd an phróisis agus ní bheidh sé chomh scanrúil is a cheapfá agus tá seans ann go bhfeicfidh an duine eile mionsonraí nach bhfuil feicthe agat.'

Deir sí chomh maith ‘Caithfidh mé a rá go raibh an Coimisiún an-chabhrach agus d’fhreagair siad gach ceist a chuir mé orthu agus fuaireamar tacaíocht láidir ón stáisiún raidió- Raidió na Life, bhíomar an-sásta leo.’

Agus cad eile atá ar na bacáin don bhean bhríomhar ghnóthach seo? Bhuel ní bheidh sí ag dul ar strae ón bhfilíocht go gceann tamaill, ábhar a bhfuil spéis leanúnach aici ann. ‘Fuaireamar maoiniú do shraith eile bunaithe ar fhilíocht na hArdteistiméireachta. Táimid á hullmhú  i  láthair na huaire. Tá súil againn go bhfaighimid cuid de na filí nua-aimseartha lena ndánta féin a léamh agus tabharfaidh sé seans do na daltaí scoile éisteacht le rithim agus luas na ndánta chun iad a spreagadh! Cé go mbeidh an tsraith ag díriú isteach ar na dánta i gcomhthéacs na scrúduithe, tabharfar tuiscint níos doimhne ar an bhfilíocht chomh maith.

Dóibh siúd atá i mBaile  Átha Cliath nó sa cheantar máguaird, craoltar Caifé Cois Life gach Aoine tar éis an nuacht@6 ar Raidió na Life 106.4 FM

Cogar spoke to Máiréad Uí Dhomhnaill, producer of one of the most talked about radio series amongst Irish speakers in the Capital in  recent times, ‘Caifé Cois Life’ which will be broadcast on the community radio station ‘Raidió na Life’ over 12 weeks this Spring.

The series was awarded funding under the Sound and Vision funding scheme administered by the BCI and Máiréad gave us a few helpful hints for those wishing to apply for funding in the future.

First of all she explained the concept behind the radio project.  ‘Well it was based on An Caifé Gorm which was thriving in the capital city in the late 1980’s.  At that exciting time, young artists such as Liam Ó Maonlaoí and Michael Davitt were at the top of their game and there was a close link between the Café and An tOireachtas (Irish language festival). This night of music and poetry was held in Ranelagh on the Southside of the city and there was great fun and company to be had.  An aspect of an Caifé Gorm which I really enjoyed was that while there was music and poetry and the poets reading their own work aloud,  the audience were also able to play a central part in the evening’s  events.

It was this live atmosphere and the lively crowd that really set the poetry alight and when she thought of recording a radio series she wanted to record it in front of a real audience instead of taping it in the studio.

As an independent radio presenter and producer the next step was to find a suitable venue in which to record the series and this proved to be a challenge for Máiréad and Deirdre Donnelly , the other partner in the production company, ‘Scéal Eile’.  ‘We were  lucky to get the Foras na Gaeilge Hall in Merrion Square in Dublin.  The venue was very suitable, central and empty at the right time and we only had to move some of the lights and hire out some equipment. Raidió na Life is based in the same building so we were able to employ an technician from Raidió na Life since Deirdre and I don’t deal with the technical aspects of recording  often.’

It’s obvious that people living in the city had a great interest in the project as between thirty and sixty people came to every event even though it was recorded in the middle of winter and the weather was not in their favour.

As Máiréad reveals: ‘Refreshments were very important on the night, the audience supported us while the recording was underway so we employed someone to provide refreshments and this ensured that there was an informal and friendly atmosphere at every occasion.’

Máiréad also reveals that it was not all that hard to find poets and other participants either.
‘I don’t know why we picked a certain number of poets, there are a great deal of Irish language poets out there and I’m sure you could take the chance and record other programmes with little difficulty in Dingle, Connemara and Donegal or another 20 programmes with little bother.  You would imagine it would be hard to get poets to confirm before funding has been provided officially but we were lucky that they were so willing to commit to the project.’

Regarding the Sound and Vision scheme she explains that she and Deirdre founded a production company before they submitted their application.  There were plenty of reasons for this,  some of them being that the process was more transparent as a result  and that an application had a better standing, financially, if there was company behind it than an individual.

She also remarks ‘There is a lot of paperwork and the best advice I could give to anyone is to sit down with another person when going through the process and then it is not as frightening as you would think and there’s the possibility that the other person will pick up on a detail you might have missed’.

She also says ‘I have to say that the Commission were very helpful and answered every question I asked them and we received great support from the radio station-Raidió na Life, we were delighted with them’.

So what’s next for this energetic woman? Well she won’t be straying from poetry any time soon, a subject which she has a great interest in. ‘We received funding for another series based on the Leaving Cert Poetry syllabus. We are currently preparing for that series. We hope to get some of the modern-day poets to read their own poetry and this will give students the chance to hear the rhythm and flow of the poems and might even inspire them! Even though the series will concentrate on the poetry in the context of the exam, the programme will provide a broader understanding of poetry generally.'

For those in and around Dublin,  Caifé Cois Life is broadcast every Friday after the news@6 on Raidió na Life 106.4 FM

Blúiríní staire le cloisteáil i sraith nua ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta

Bitesize Blasts of the Past on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta

Scéala Éireann is teideal do shraith nua clár staire ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta ar cuireadh tús leo ag an deireadh seachtaine. Stair na hÉireann a bheidh á ríomh sa tsraith nua seo, atá á léiriú ag Tomás Mac Con Iomaire.

Is minic cláir staire a bheith ródhírithe ar shaineolaithe staire, agus an iomarca eolais iontu don ghnáthéisteoir, dar le Tomás Mac Con Iomaire. Is é sin an fáth ar shocraigh sé ar an tsraith nua seo de chlár 12 nóiméad a chur i dtoll a chéile, agus é mar aidhm aige léargas a thabhairt do ghnáthéisteoirí ar stair na tíre le 1500 bliain anuas nó mar sin, ó theacht na Críostaíochta go hÉirinn go dtí stair na dTrioblóidí sa Tuaisceart agus ré an tíogair cheiltigh.

Maoiníodh an tsraith seo le cúnamh airgeadais ón scéim Fuaim agus Fís de chuid Choimisiún Chraolacháin na hÉireann. Bíonn Scéala Éireann le cloisteáil maidin Shathairn ag 9.45r.n. ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. Tá podchraoladh den chlár ar fáil freisin

[Ar Lean]

Scéala Éireann is the name of a new history series which commenced broadcasting last weekend on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. The series which is produced by Tomas Mac Con Iomaire will explore the history of Ireland.

History Series are often too focused on the history experts with too much information for the ordinary listener according to Tomás Mac Con Iomaire. This is why he instead decided to concentrate on producing a new series of 12 minute programmes which aim to inform the audience of Irish History for the last 1500 years- from the coming of Christianity to the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the Celtic Tiger.

The series was funded under the Sound and Vision Schme funded by the Boradcasting Commission of Ireland. Scéala Éireann is broadcast every Saturday Morning at 9.45 a.m on RTE Raidió na Gaeltachta.
A podcast of the programme is also available here
