Luath-thumoideachas sna gaelscoileanna faoi bhagairt

Early Immersion Education in gaelscoileanna under threat

An cheist is mó atá i mbéal phobal na Gaeilge agus lucht a spéise faoi láthair ná luath-thumoideachas Gaeilge. Scaip an tAire Oideachais agus Eolaíochta, Mary Hanafin ciorclán mí Iúil seo caite ag cur iallaigh ar na scoileanna 2.5 uair Béarla in aghaidh na seachtaine a mhúineadh ón dara téarma de naíonáin shóisir i ngach gaelscoil sa tír. Ní aontaíonn formhór na scoileanna leis an gcur chuige seo, ach ceann de na rudaí is mó atá ag cur isteach orthu ná an easpa taighde a bhaineann le cinneadh an Aire. Tá an tumoideachas sa dara teanga aitheanta go hidirnáisiúnta, ach tá bearnaí sa taighde maidir le cás na Gaeilge sa tír seo. Glacadh d'aonghuth ag cruinniú urghnách ginearálta a reáchtáil Gaelscoileanna leis na trí rún a moladh. Is féidir PDF (54KB) de na rúin a íoslódáil anseo.

Toisc go bhfuil ar a laghad gaelscoil amháin i ngach contae sa tír seo anois is scéal é seo a mbeidh tionchar aige ar gach pobal sa tír. Tá aitheantas faighte ag na gaelscoileanna as a gcur chuige agus a bhforbairt agus anois braitear go bhfuil an bonn á bhaint den dul chun cinn sin.

Cuireann Bláthnaid Ní Ghréacháin Ardfheidhmeannach Ghaelscoileanna ag 01-4773155 agus Mícheál Ó Broin, Uachtarán Ghaelscoileanna ag 087-9467700 fáilte roimh agallaimh ar an gceist ríthábhachtach seo.

Cinneadh éigríonna an Aire Oideachais agus Eolaíochta maidir le Córas Tumoideachais na ngaelscoileanna

Cur chuige "á la carte" an Aire

Dul amú ar Hanafin

The most talked about issue in the Irish Language Community and among other interested parties at the moment is early Irish Language immersion education. The Minister for Education and Science, Mary Hanafin issued a circular which compels the schools to teach 2.5 hours of English a week from the second term of junior infants in every gaelscoil in the country. The majority of the schools do not agree with this approach but one of the things that has caused the most consternation is the lack of research behind the Minister's decision. The method of total immersion in the second language is internationally recognised but there are gaps in the research in relation to the Irish Language in this country. The 3 motions that were proposed were agreed unanimously at the EGM. (You can download a PDF (54KB) of the motions in Irish here)

As there is at least one gaelscoil in every county in the country now this story will affect every community in the country. Gaelscoileanna all over the country have achieved recognition for their approach and their development and now it is felt that their growth will be undermined.

Bláthnaid Ní Ghreacháin, Chief Executive of Gaelscoileanna at 01 4773155 and Micheál Ó Broin, President of Gaelscoileanna at 087-9467700 are happy to do interviews on this important issue.

Agus mé ag taisteal timpeall na hAlban le linn "An Chuairt 2007" an tseachtain seo caite rith sé liom go raibh roinnt nathanna cainte, seanfhocal, beannachtaí agus mallachtaí a bhaineann le taisteal.

While travelling in Scotland last week during "An Chuairt 2007" it occurred to me that there are many nice idioms, proverbs, blessings agus curses associated with travel.

Lucht taistealach - the jet-set

An Lucht Siúil/ Taistil - The Travelling Community

Thug sí cuairt na cruinne - she travelled the world

Giorraíonn beirt bóthar - company shortens the road

Níor chuir Dia sceach i mbéal an chuain riamh
God never stopped the wheels of progress

Turas in aistear a bhí ann - It was a waste of time to go there

Níorbh aistear dó é - It was no trouble to him

Ná haistrigh an scéal sin - Don't tell anyone that

Bhí siad ag gabháil anonn is anall - They were to-ing and fro-ing

An turas is faide sa saol tosaíonn sé le coiscéim bheag amháin
Life's longest journey starts with one small step

Céim bheag amháin d'fhear, léim ollmhór don chine daonna
One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind

Céard is ainm duitse agus cad as duit agus cé leis a bhfuil tú ag craoladh?
Emily-Ann Rennison is ainm dom. Is as Luimneach dom agus tá mé ag craoladh le Spin South West. Pop Raidió is ainm don chlár s'agamsa.

Cén difríocht is mó, dar leat, idir craoladh i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla?
Domsa tagann sé i bhfad níos nádúrtha craoladh i nGaeilge. Ceapaim ó thaobh nathanna cainte de tá bealaí níos deise rudaí a rá as Gaeilge.

Cé hé nó cé hí an t-aoi is mó a bhfuil fonn ort agallamh a chur air nó uirthi i nGaeilge?
Ba bhreá liom agallamh a chur ar Mhicheál Ó Muircheartaigh ach toisc gur clár pop raidió atá agam ní fheadair céard é an bhealach is fearr é a mhealladh ar an gclár!

Cé hé nó hí an t-aoi is fearr a bhí ar an gclár agat?
Rinne mé agallamh le Louis de Paor agus bhí sé ar fheabhas.

Céard é an clár raidió is fearr leatsa?
Ray D'Arcy ar Today FM agus gan dabht gach duine ar Spin South West!

Céard é an spreagadh is mó duitse agus tú i mbun craolta?
Tá fonn orm taispeáint go bhfuil spraoi ag baint leis an teanga. Ceapann daoine nach bhfuil i gceist léi ach leabhair, an tuiseal ginideach, ábhar scoile srl ach táimse ag iarraidh an taitneamh a bhainim as an teanga mé féin a thaispeáint.

Bíonn clár Emily Anne, Pop Raidió, le cloisteáil ar Spin Southwest gach maidin Satharn 10.45rn-12.45in. Tuilleadh eolais ar SpinSouthWest.com

What's your name, where are you from and who are you broadcasting with?
Emily-Anne Rennison is my name. I'm from Limerick and I broadcast with Spin Southwest. My show is called Pop Raidió.

What is the biggest difference, do you think, between broadcasting in Irish and in English?
For me broadcasting in Irish comes more naturally. I think that there are nicer ways to say things in Irish, nicer turns of phrase.

Who is the person you would most like to interview in Irish?
I would love to interview Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh but as I have a pop show who knows how on earth I could coax him onto the show!

Who was the best guest you ever had on your programme?
I did an interview with Louis de Paor and he was brilliant.

What is your favourite radio programme?
Ray D'Arcy on Today FM and of course everyone on Spin South West!

What is the biggest inspiration for you in your broadcasting?
I want to show that the Irish Language can be fun. People think that it's all books, tuiseal ginideach, school work etc. but I try to show the enjoyment I get from the language myself.

Emily-Anne's programme, Pop Raidió, can be heard every Saturday morning from 10.45am-12.45pm. More information on SpinSouthWest.com
