The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures contains six disciplines, Classics, French, Gaeilge, German, Italian and Spanish with more than 40 full time academic staff members engaged in teaching and research in the School.  Roinn na Gaeilge currently has about 600 students at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels, on the undergraduate programmes Gaeilge and Celtic Civilisation, on the MA Nua-Ghaeilge and the PhD Nua-Ghaeilge.  Roinn na Gaeilge is a centre of research in Modern Irish prose, poetry and drama, folklore and song traditions, sociolinguistics and medieval and ancient Celtic languages, with staff members regularly contributing to national and international dialogue in these fields through conference presentations and prominent journal and monograph publications. Roinn na Gaeilge currently has twenty-two PhD students.  For over twenty years the annual Comhdháil ar Litríocht agus Cultúr na Gaeilge has been attracting scholars of all aspects of Irish literature and culture to NUI Galway in October.
